I just got back from #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In the last few days of the UN summit, I oscillated between feeling frustration and appreciation. While all 66,000 delegates surely also felt the former in the long hours of negotiations, uncertainty, and disagreement, I keep reflecting on the latter. Being together and working together with people from all over the world, on this issue that touches everyone's lives, was energizing, even after the two weeks. I walk away with appreciation and motivation to keep moving the needle in my own community, and every day at work. I want to keep working with incredible people and companies who are ready to communicate their stories and their solutions and share their energy. That's how we'll get it done. If you want to join me, Browning Environmental Communications is hiring, and we are looking for passionate & talented folks to join our team. We're looking for both experienced communications professionals with expertise in the energy transition or environmental sustainability and for those looking to start a career in communications. Come work with me in our new office in Boston (or join my colleagues in DC)! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g_33gFMA

It has been incredibly motivating for all of us here at Browning to see the UNDP's #PeoplesClimateVote having such a powerful impact at #COP29! The Peoples’ Climate Vote 2024 is the world’s largest standalone survey on #ClimateChange — representing 77 countries and covering 87% of the world’s population. While there has been recent political pushback on the energy transition in many countries, this comprehensive survey shows that a majority of people around the globe want more action – not less. This year’s results showed 80% of people globally want their governments to take stronger action on climate, while only 39% said big businesses are doing enough to address the crisis. As public and private sector decision-makers from around the world have gathered at COP29 Azerbaijan, it is more important than ever that this data is at the heart of the conversation. "What we are seeing is not only incredible will and excitement from the global communities to tackle the climate crisis, but also a reminder that NDCs aren't just books or communications materials or tools. These are our lifelines of the future, and they are deciding what this future is going to look like." -- Hailey Campbell, Co-Executive Director of Care About Climate and UNICEF Climate Breakthrough Fellow. It has been an honor to work with the UNDP, the polling experts at the University of Oxford, and the global survey specialists at GeoPoll to create this hugely valuable demonstration of public demand for addressing climate change. Shout out to all those who joined me at the #Greenbuild International Conference last week. Tons of ingenuity and advancement happening in the building space! Here are a couple data points I found interesting: 1️⃣ The sustainable construction market is expected to be worth over $2 trillion by 2030. 2️⃣ If we got more green roofs above our heads, urban air temperatures could be lowered by up to 5°C. 3️⃣ LEED-certified buildings often have higher resale values because people want to work somewhere green.

The first week of #COP29 – dubbed the “Finance COP” – has been action-packed. UN Secretary General António Guterres set the tone for the week when he implored “the world must pay up, or humanity will pay the price”. With critical decisions on climate financing in focus, here are some key highlights from the week 👇 🔹 A Game-Changer for Carbon Markets: For the first time, countries have agreed rules relating to Article 6.4 of the #ParisAgreement, setting the stage for a United Nations backed global carbon market that could drive billions to developing countries. 🔹 Bold Commitments: The UK and Brazil have set ambitious new climate targets in their revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), signalling renewed commitment to a low-carbon future. 🔹 Funding pledges: such as that from Singapore announcing $500 million to support Asia's #decarbonisation. Looking ahead, Week 2 promises more developments on #ClimateFinance and #CarbonMarkets. Negotiators will be continuing efforts to define and agree the New Collective Quantified Goal, provide more detail on the loss and damage fund, and more. Achieving climate financing at the volume needed is seen as critical to supporting ambitious 'third generation' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due by February 2025 and helping implement National Adaptation Plans. Top stories from this week include: 📰 Bloomberg: COP29 Negotiators Agree on Global Carbon Market Mechanism. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eJJvtPdP 📰 BBC News: Keir Starmer tells COP29 there will be new 'ambitious' climate target for UK 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eCZb7_EF 📰 CNA: Singapore pledges US$500m to accelerate capital flows into green projects 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e_7kGzPS Browning is tracking these developments from #Baku, London, and Washington DC, with a team on the ground supporting clients and partners at this critical time for environmental action. 🔹 Adam Short, Global Managing Director 🔹 Paula Struthoff, Head of New England Office 🔹 Zoë Fillingham, Account Director #EnvironmentalCommunications COP29 Azerbaijan 📸 (c) UN Climate Change - Habib Samadov

It’s been just over a week since the U.S. election — and the world is still working to understand its potential impacts on clean energy and environmental policy. This week’s #BrowningBrief includes a look at the proposed new head of the EPA, a remark from the Exxon Mobil CEO on the #ParisAgreement, and a down ballot review of climate policy in states and local elections. The #GlobalCarbonBudget report launched today at #COP29! Watch the animation to learn more 👇 Compiled by over 100 scientists from 70 organizations in 18 countries since 2006, the Global #CarbonBudget is the definitive assessment of global carbon #emissions and sink. The report tracks the number of years – and tonnes of carbon emissions – we have left before crossing the dangerous 1.5C threshold. Launched today at COP29 Azerbaijan, this year’s findings paint the picture of stalled action. Despite the urgent need to cut emissions to and approaching deadlines for global #decarbonization pledges, global carbon emissions from fossil fuels have reached a record high in 2024. Browning is proud to have partnered with the University of Exeter for the last 4 years on media support for the report and helped to bring this important research to policymakers and the global public. Great to be in Baku for the UN Climate Conference with the Browning Environmental Communications team. Every climate COP is consequential and over the next two weeks we can hope - and work hard for - much needed progress on climate finance, carbon markets and a push for ambitious updates to Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs). The stage is also set for an early glimpse into how those driving progress on environmental issues plan to adapt to new political, climate and economic realities. In the seventeen years since my first COP (COP13), the scale of investment and transformation underway across different sectors and countries is staggering - there are many reasons to be optimistic about what can be achieved in the next few years. Reach out. Say hello. #environmentalcommunications #climateaction COP29 Azerbaijan
