Building the foundation for global health equity
About us
Build Health International (BHI) promotes global equity by developing high-quality health infrastructure to enable access to dignified and affordable healthcare to those who need it most. Working with public sector and NGO partners in fragile health systems, we develop infrastructure solutions that elevate the quality and accessibility of healthcare in the most impoverished and resource-constrained regions of the world. Infrastructure is an essential, yet often overlooked, tenet of global health. Organizations seeking facility support in under-resourced regions routinely face two imperfect options: importing models and methods from the Global North, designed without regard to local efficiencies, or utilizing under-resourced assets that are unable to deliver the quality and durability needed. BHI offers a third alternative - a common-sense approach to infrastructure that allows for delivery of high-quality care, that can also be operated and maintained in a resource-constrained setting. We work to make each of our healthcare facilities a part of robust public healthcare systems that will provide long-term quality, accessible, and affordable care to the local community.

Build Health International reposted this
It was a great to attend CUGH last week with Andrew Johnston and an honor to sit on a panel alongside Mark Ansermino and Niranjan Kissoon, moderated by Zoë Mullan, to discuss the Lancet Global Health Oxygen Commission's findings on oxygen coverage gaps, cost of closing them, and what's needed to provide reliable care and sustain medical oxygen systems worldwide. Oxygen generation is only the first step. Build Health International prioritizes training and local capacity building delivering skills to manage and maintain oxygen systems for the long-term – and in 2024 delivered 26 trainings across 14 countries, reaching nearly 500 biomedical engineers, technicians, and healthcare administrators. All part of strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

"The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world.” It was three years ago today that we learned of the passing of Dr. Paul Farmer of Partners In Health. Dr. Farmer's vision to deliver accessible, high-quality, and affordable health care to every patient has shaped so much of what Build Health International does every day. To design and build healthcare infrastructure in underserved regions is a testament to his legacy and our commitment to #GlobalHealthEquity. We will continue to build together.

Too many lives have been lost due to major gaps in healthcare systems in resource-constrained settings. One of the key culprits? Lack of access to #MedicalOxygen. A recent report from The Lancet Group highlights the critical steps, stakeholders, and organizations that are making strides for patients. Thanks to the collaboration and leadership of Build Health International Managing Director Jim Ansara, Every Breath Counts, Global Oxygen Alliance, The Global Fund, the Skoll Foundation, The DAK Foundation, and the Wagner Foundation, all of whom have driven advocacy efforts forward. Pro tip to overcoming supply chain delays: build a warehouse. 🔨 Spanning 4,000 square feet, the Hinche warehouse provides a critical point of connection for supply routes throughout #Haiti. The facility serves as a space to receive, store, and ship items ranging from construction items to medical equipment, ensuring that healthcare facilities can receive the resources that save lives. From rendering to reality. ❇😱 Located at Redeemer's University in Ede, Nigeria, and forming part of the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (formerly ACEGID), ACEGID is more than a college facility. BHI's design of its most recent campus expansion enhances scientific collaboration, allowing researchers to better understand and monitor the world's deadliest pathogens. Last week, we welcomed Sierra Leone's Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby to the Maternal Center of Excellence. Much of BHI's work in Sierra Leone and beyond is possible thanks to partnerships with governments, industries, and nonprofit organizations. To see especially see companies leverage their resources for social good and health equity makes all the difference. Thanks to Turner Construction Company for being a leader who BHI can count on. From equipping our local teams with personal protective equipment to donating materials, we build better and more effectively with their support. Photo credit: Partners In Health Sierra Leone
