About us
In 1933 Byrne began selling high quality milk in glass bottles and delivering it to Central New York homes in horse-drawn wagons. It was the commitment to exceptional quality and the strong desire to produce the finest products that set Byrne apart. Today, Byrne is a fourth generation, family-owned producer and distributor of Milk, Cream, Ice Cream and a variety of other dairy products. Based in Central New York, with its abundant supply of high quality milk, Byrne works with local family farms. Byrne’s average farm is only 35 miles from it’s plants where they receive around 50 million pounds of milk each month. Strong relationships with their farmers has been a cornerstone of Byrne’s business lasting through generations and bonded by handshakes not contracts. Byrne currently has three manufacturing facilities including an Ice Cream Plant located in Syracuse, N.Y, an Extended Shelf Life (ESL) and Ultra High Temperature (UHT) Pasteurization Plant in DeWitt, N.Y., and a manufacturing facility located in Cortlandville, N.Y.

Earlier this week, we highlighted one of the processes in Oracle that is making our workflows smoother at Byrne. Today’s Employee Spotlight features a member of Team Byrne who had a bright idea to improve Oracle even further! Meet Katie H., Accounts Payable Specialist. Katie is in her 10th year at Byrne. She started out as plant administrator for Byrne Cortlandville, but moved into AP a few years ago when BCV was retooled from a yoghurt plant to an Extended Shelf-Life plant. After Oracle launched last year, Katie noticed that sometimes, tiny variances in pricing would cause the software to reject invoices. This required the AP team to contact the plant that originally approved the invoice. It could take the plant a few days to fix the purchase order and resubmit for approval, delaying invoices by a week or more. Katie researched these variances and was able to adjust the acceptability parameters for these calculations in Oracle. This saves the AP team lots of time that previously had been spent redoing calculations and requesting PO revisions. “This helps at the plant level so we’re not kicking back invoices for less than a penny,” Katie explains. “It helps us to strengthen our teamwork and communication when we’re able to eliminate the menial issues.” Oracle has improved efficiency at Byrne, especially when it comes to reconciling POs with invoices. “It’s nice to see everything in one spot on the dashboard. Check runs are getting easier,” Katie says. “When everything was paper, it was very easy for a payment to get missed and harder to keep track of what payments were coming due to get those approvals.” Katie’s experience working in the plant helped her understand both the requester and approver sides of this issue. The Oracle transition has taken a lot of time and effort for Team Byrne, but Katie welcomes the challenge. “There are growing pains with it, and I enjoy trying to find efficiencies where we can make it work better for us,” she says. If anyone at Byrne needs some help with the Oracle software, Katie encourages them to ask questions! “You can’t get the help unless you ask. Those of us that have been in it for a while are always a phone call away or a Teams message away,” she says. Outside work, Katie enjoys reading, crafting (jewelry and cross-stitch), spending time with her family, and walking her Basset hound. Her favorite Mighty Fine products are Ball Park Crunch ice cream and the Shortbread Black Raspberry Twist Cookiewich. Thanks for all you do, Katie – and keep your bright ideas coming!

In August 2024, Byrne launched its new Oracle Cloud ERP system to manage various aspects of our business. Now that we’re nearing the 6-month mark, we’re checking in with Training Manager Chloe B. to see how Oracle has improved our workflow. “It’s definitely streamlined a lot of processes,” Chloe says of Oracle’s impact. “We’re at a point where people are comfortable with the system, so I can finally develop training content for them. It’s not just that people have learned it and are getting good at it. They want to master it.” Chloe is singing the praises of OGL – Oracle Guided Learning. This widget is an interactive how-to guide for processes in Oracle. Instructions appear as an overlay on the user’s screen. “You can log onto Oracle, click on the OGL widget, and it walks you through the process step-by-step,” says Chloe. OGL is helpful for employees filling in for their coworkers or learning new processes. The example shown here will be used by the finance and accounting teams, but Chloe and the training department are working on expanding OGL offerings. “The process is still something we are experimenting with together, but the goal is to have them finished ASAP so that people can start familiarizing themselves. At some point in the future, we hope to have guides for virtually every corporate process,” Chloe says.

We’re kicking off our 2025 Employee Spotlights with Verrick H., Training Manager! Verrick joined #TeamByrne 3 years ago after spending a decade in biological pharmaceuticals and tech manufacturing, where he held various positions. He developed a knack for technical writing and training. After deciding that tech manufacturing was not the field for him, Verrick sought new opportunities. “I applied to Byrne looking for a local company known to help employees build their skills and promoted from within. I was looking to step back and restart in a new field, starting on the floor and working my way up,” he says. Verrick started out in the Processing department at Byrne DeWitt. “After learning my position, I was given a few opportunities to show my skills in writing #SOP and creation of other technical documents,” he says. Verrick moved into the Training department and is now a Training Manager. “I work at both liquid milk plants working with Raw Receiving, Quality, and Processing to create training materials, update SOP and other technical documents. I also spend time auditing operations to ensure SOP/best practices are being executed,” Verrick explains. With nearly 600 employees, Byrne is growing but still maintains a close-knit atmosphere. Verrick says he appreciates “that I am a person, not a number to a huge company.” “I feel much more at home with a company that upper management knows who you are and takes a moment to catch up,” he says, adding that Byrne offers plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement. Along the way, Verrick has met some great mentors at Byrne, including Processing Manager Mike T. and Training Manager Jim B. Outside work, Verrick loves the outdoors. “I do a large amount of camping during the summer along with riding AV’s. When winter hits, I spend a lot of time on the ice chasing walleyes and shooting in local dart leagues,” he says. Verrick’s favorite #MightyFine product is the Cookiewich.

#ByrneDairy donated Shelf-Stable Half & Half to the Grace Space Warming Center in Cortland today! The Grace Space offers homeless people a safe, warm gathering place indoors during the winter months. Many traditional shelters are only open at night, but the Grace Space is open weekdays during the day. Visitors can warm up with a cup of coffee, do their laundry, or learn more about services from agencies like Catholic Charities and the Cortland County Community Action Program (CAPCO). The Grace Space is a project of the Cortland County Housing & Homelessness Coalition. The Grace Space serves 30-40 visitors daily. The program relies heavily on volunteers and community donations. Byrne is proud to support the Grace Space and many other local causes. Thank you to the Grace Space volunteers for showing us around the center and for taking such great care of this vulnerable population! If you would like to join Byrne in supporting this amazing cause, please visit The Grace Space's website: https://buff.ly/4g4X6F3
