The devastating fires in Los Angeles have prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents; unfortunately, some of our very own volunteers were also impacted. Canine Companions #therapydog team Alannah and therapy dog Guava evacuated last Tuesday night to Riverside to take shelter while the fires began to spread. Although they spent many anxious moments together, their journey was also filled with unexpected smiles along the way. "Guava was able to visit our students in the hotel in Anaheim where we sent all the students who were flying in from different countries. The students (and other people in the hotel!) were happy to see her. We still do not have power in our home, but we are living out of a dorm right now. She's been working in the dorms and welcoming kids back to the campus. A lot of kids are happy to see her and it's been great stimulation for her. She has been great throughout all of this. She is bringing so much joy to our students and adults. Right now, she is cuddling on the couch with students who lost their homes." 💔 Alannah and Guava are currently safe and are waiting to return to their home. To everyone impacted by the fires, please stay safe and take care of one another. ❤️🙏 #therapydogthursday #LAFires #palisadesfire #support #safety #community

"I will say that when I was with Farley for less than 30 minutes — it was good and I knew," Lee recalls the first time he was introduced to his now #servicedog, Farley. Our team, client Lee with Service Dog Farley, started their journey together five years ago, when Lee was injured in a car accident that restricted his independence. Lee's wife, Melody, suggested he apply to receive a dog from us, as his mobility was restricted to a power wheelchair. Their human-canine bond has been invaluable ever since they've matched, as Lee says one of the main issues Farley helps with is retrieving items that Lee drops and can't easily reach to pick up. 🐕🦺 Read more about their partnership in the The Oklahoman article: bit.ly/42bf0ll #LeadWithIndependence #independence #disabilityawareness 📸 The Oklahoman

As we welcome our 50th anniversary year in 2025, we're looking back and sharing key moments in our decades-long journey. 🐕🦺 This month in Canine Companions history... Canine Companions #hearingdog Xyla and her trainer were featured on the popular CBS soap opera, "Guiding Light" in 1992. Xyla assisted the show’s character, A.C. Mallett, who was injured in an explosion. 🐶 Learn more about our history: https://lnkd.in/gjyW5cev #CanineIndependence50 #servicedog #LeadWithIndependence #history #guidinglight #cbs #soapopera #tbt

🌹 A week ago, we had an amazing chance to be highlighted in the #RoseParade, thanks to Lions Clubs International who selected Lions Project for Canine Companions to be featured this year. We were honored to be represented by retired US Army Sergeant Steve Blackman, who rode on the Lions Club float alongside his Canine Companions #servicedog, Priscilla. In addition, some of our future #servicedogs and their amazing #volunteer puppy raisers accompanied the float down its route. With more than 800,000 people attending the #parade in person and many more who tuned in, this incredible opportunity allowed us to share our mission with so many more community members across the country. This great opportunity wouldn't have been possible without our outstanding partnership with the Lions Project for Canine Companions. Check out the behind-the-scenes photos and moments from the parade! 🐾 Read our newsroom article to watch parade coverage from RFD-TV and learn more about the event: bit.ly/4gMIwlH 🐕🦺 Learn more about our service dog program: canine.org/service-dogs Here's to a great kick off to our 50th year and many more celebrations to come! #CanineIndependence50 #Roseparade #Lionsclub #RoseParadeLionsandCanine #birthday #50thanniversary #usarmy #veteran City of Pasadena

Wait for it... Just when you thought you shined 😂 Puppy raising is a crucial part of our mission to provide #servicedogs to people with disabilities - because it all starts with a puppy! 🐶 After our puppies turn eights weeks old, each puppy is paired with a #volunteer who spends the next 16 to 18 months raising, training and socializing them to ensure they have the necessary skills to advance to professional #service dog training. It takes dedication, commitment and love, but if you ask any of our volunteers who's participated, they'll tell you in a heartbeat about its heartwarming rewards and impact. ❤️ 🐾 Discover more about our volunteer puppy raising program: canine.org/raise #puppy #puppies #servicedog #LeadWithIndependence
