Cell-site-simulators—surveillance devices that mimic cell towers to intercept sensitive data—were likely deployed at the 2024 DNC, raising serious concerns about privacy. The Salt Typhoon attack exposed how outdated telecom systems let Chinese hackers intercept calls and access sensitive data—even targeting top officials. This didn’t happen overnight. Decades of aging infrastructure and a lack of competition have made our networks easy targets. It’s time for a full reboot. Telecom is critical infrastructure, and modernizing it isn’t optional—it’s essential. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dmZ2zQTk

📱 The Justice Department's undisclosed access to phone and text logs of 43 Congressional staffers raises serious concerns about privacy, data retention, and disclosure: https://lnkd.in/e55jyJV2 At Cape, we understand the balance between public safety and personal privacy. We comply with lawful government requests but work tirelessly to protect our subscribers: ⚫ Minimal Data Retention: We collect the minimum data necessary to provide your service and retain it for the shortest time possible, reducing the risk of exposure. ⚫ Subscriber Notification: Unless explicitly prohibited by law, we inform subscribers of any legal process seeking their data, giving them a chance to challenge it. ⚫ Challenging Overreach: We contest nondisclosure obligations or requests that aren’t narrowly tailored or lawful. To date, Cape has never received a request for subscriber data with a nondisclosure obligation. We're committed to transparency and protecting your privacy. On the Risky Business Podcast, Patrick Gray and Adam Boileau discussed the telco vulnerabilities that enabled the recent Salt Typhoon attacks. They also shared insights on how #Cape could be positioned to address these challenges. “There are a number of things in the telco world that are difficult to solve at the edge of the network—things like SS7, tracking, metadata leakage, call records… You can’t really solve [those] at the network edge. You have to do that in the middle of the network… Having a telco where security is a part of their value proposition as a company… would be a good thing.” Listen to the full discussion here: https://lnkd.in/ea2pxMjH
