📣 Exciting news! Capital Region Land Conservancy is a Silver Medal Award Winner of the 2024 Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards! 🏅 The award is in honor of CRLC's protection of the core area of the New Market Heights Battlefield in eastern Henrico County and was bestowed during the Environment Virginia Symposium held at Virginia Military Insitute in Lexington, Virginia on April 9-11, 2024. We are proud to be a three-time recipient of a Governor's Award. #CRLC acquired and protected the core site of The Battle of New Market Heights in January 2023. It features a nearly 800-foot segment of original earthworks known as The New Market Line and holds additional historic significance as the greatest victory of the United States Colored Troops during the American Civil War, where fourteen of the soldiers received the Medal of Honor for their bravery in battle on September 29, 1864. Preservation Virginia had listed New Market Heights Battlefield among Virginia’s Most Endangered Historic Places in 2021. This land conservation project was made possible in part by funding from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation and American Battlefield Protection Program. Sponsored by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards recognize significant contributions of environmental and conservation leaders in five categories including land conservation. Many thanks to anchor Jake Burns and WTVR-TV for our latest feature on our recent milestone acquisition. During our organization's work over the past several years to conserve areas along Richmond's James River, including property at Dock Street and Mayo Island, we found that a portion of the Richmond Slave Trail was still under private ownership. Now, this historic site will be protected in perpetuity and added to the James River Park System. Watch the video for the full story! ttps://https://lnkd.in/extA962g

While only 130-feet wide and 2,300-feet long, the strip of property that CRLC successfully negotiated and completed acquisition of along the James River includes an essential portion of the Richmond Slave Trail. Approximately 4.5 acres of land located between Interstate 95 and Ancarrow’s Landing has been purchased from Norfolk Southern and will go under the James River Park System conservation easement and transferred to the City of Richmond to become part of the park. Read more about this exciting project that brings even more green space to Richmond! The acquisition is being supported by the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation with a $150,000 grant that requires a 1:1 match. The Friends of the James River Park System www.jamesriverpark.org have committed $30,000 with its own challenge grant asking the public to contribute another $30,000 towards the purchase of this property. Learn more about how you can help us meet this match. https://lnkd.in/ep5xgJnd
