During a recent Restaurant Finance Monitor #Webinar hosted by John Hamburger, Franchise Times/Restaurant Finance Monitor President, Brett Bishov, Capital Insight’s Managing Partner, shared insightful benchmarks. According to Brett, restaurant operators contemplating selling should run the numbers and provide terms that work for the buyer, especially if they own real estate and lease it to their operating company. “Restaurant operations trade anywhere from six-to-seven times EBITDA. With rent, however, a seven cap equals 14x EBITDA. For every dollar of rent you pay yourself, you can get $14. For every dollar of operations, you only can get $6 or $7. The temptation is to maximize the amount of rents you pay”. “Yet the rents create a fixed obligation. When you overburden a business with too much rent it’s leverage. It’s just another obligation that can hurt the business. You want to make the sale. In an inspiring article from last April 25th, the Franchise Times featured Capital Insight Managing Director, Brett Bishov’s resilient cancer story. In the article, Brett opened up about his fight against cancer and how his family, and especially his wife Kate and his service dogs, first Lucy and now Archie, became his pillars of strength. Besides helping people achieve their business dreams, Brett has also been through tough times, including battling cancer twice and losing his ability to speak. His wife Kate has been by his side the whole way, and he got two furry helpers, Lucy and now Archie, the service dogs who's been a big part of his recovery. Facing this new challenge, Brett perfectly captured his determined spirit: "I thought about the magnitude of what I went through, but there's no deliberating.
