The Capra Course is an online course with Fritjof Capra, based on his textbook ~ The Systems View of Life.
About us
During the last three decades, a new conception of life has emerged at the forefront of science. It is a unified view that integrates life’s biological, cognitive, social and ecological dimensions. At the very core of this new understanding of life we find a profound change of metaphors: from seeing the world as a machine to understanding it as a network. This new science of life is now being developed by outstanding researchers and their teams around the world. I have integrated their concepts and ideas into a single coherent framework — a unique synthesis, which Fritjof Capra teaches in this special online course. This new conception of life is called a “systems view” because it involves a new kind of thinking — thinking in terms of relationships, patterns, and context. In science, this way of thinking is known as “systems thinking,” or “systemic thinking,” because it is crucial to understanding living systems of any kind — living organisms, social systems, or ecosystems. Systems thinking makes us aware of the fact that the major problems of our time — energy, economics, climate change, inequality —are all interconnected and interdependent. They are systemic problems that require corresponding systemic solutions. This course will give you the conceptual tools to understand the nature of our systemic problems and to recognize the systemic solutions that are being developed by individuals and organizations around the world. And the engagement does not end when the course finishes, all participants from each Capra Course are given access to the Capra Course alumni network which will allow you to carry on conversations not only with your current group of participants, but also with those people who have already participated in other versions. How Can a Systems Lens Help Make Sense of the Unraveling? Join Jeremy Lent and Morag Gamble in a conversation with Dr. Fritjof Capra on Friday, Jan 10th to explore how systems thinking might help us comprehend these times. As the world prepares for the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, there is every reason to believe that a political cataclysm is about to erupt. The election of someone who has vowed to be a “dictator” on day one to head the world’s most powerful country, with minimal institutional or legal restraints on his power, could turn out to be one of the most momentous events in the history of the modern world. In a broader global context, we are facing accelerating climate breakdown in the wake of the disastrous COP in Azerbaijan, worsening ecological devastation around the planet, dangerous global conflicts, and an ever-widening gulf of inequality between elites and the rest of humanity that is unsurpassed in history. Much of the world is struggling to make sense of what is unfolding, and what it will mean in the years ahead. It is increasingly clear that the dominant world order is unraveling—but where do we go from here? On January 10 at 1 pm Pacific, global permaculture leader Morag Gamble will be facilitating a conversation with world-renowned systems theorist Fritjof Capra and Jeremy Lent on the systemic dynamics that underlie this fateful moment in the human story. Please RSVP here to the event (you will also need to register on Zoom) - https://lnkd.in/gnJbDVJJ . . "According to the systems view of life, all life forms are intelligent. They interact with their environment cognitively through sensory organs; and as these organs become more complex, so do the corresponding cognitive processes. Eventually, we have the evolution of brains, nervous systems, and human consciousness. The ability to form abstract concepts is a key feature of our consciousness, and human intelligence today includes the abstractions we associate with mathematics and with computers — algorithms, mathematical models, and so on. However, these mathematical abstractions are peripheral to the intelligence inherent in all living beings. Living intelligence is tacit and always organically embodied. Its key quality is the ability of being in the world, of moving around in it and surviving in it. With the development of artificial intelligence, we have overemphasized algorithms and other mathematical abstractions, and have neglected our tacit, embodied, living intelligence. As a consequence, our ability of being in the world — in other words, our wisdom — has dramatically diminished. A society that sees making money, rather than human well-being, as its main goal, and in the process of doing so destroys the natural environment on which human survival depends, cannot be deemed very intelligent. The critical question, in my view, is: which uses of AI are helpful and appropriate, and which are inappropriate because, although they enhance the mathematical aspects of human intelligence, they may diminish our embodied intelligence, or wisdom, of how we should live." ~ Dr. Fritjof Capra The quote above is an excerpt of a recent interview Fritjof did for La Lettura, an Italian Newspaper - here's the link to read the article in Italian: https://lnkd.in/gYMUjNGJ Join the Capra Course learning community and develop the leadership skills needed to face the systemic challenges of our time! This year is almost over and while in some parts of the planet the days are getting shorter, colder and darker, in others, Spring is already exploding with flowers and scents. The polycrises may sometimes become overwhelming. We may numb ourselves with endless entertainment or keep busy with work. We may turn the news off or start believing in conspiracy theories because everything is confusing and frustrating. Sometimes, it is easy to lose ourselves and believe we are too small to make any difference. Are things going to change ever? We at the Capra Course believe there are a few antidotes to all of this and we invite you to consider them: ✨Gratitude: In a society where we are bombarded with messages that emphasize we are never enough, never have enough, and will never find what we are looking for, gratitude becomes a revolutionary act: there are so many things in life we can be grateful for! What are your reasons? ✨Learning about what matters: it is difficult to focus on anything important when we have so many distractions. We need to make a conscious choice to learn about what matters: Life and how it works. In the Capra Course, we love learning about living systems and how they have already created the tools we need to change the world. What matters to you? ✨Community: nothing is healed in isolation. Life organizes itself in network (always), your well-being affects our well-being and vice versa. At the Capra Course, we have been building a growing community of systems thinkers and we are expanding in partnerships with groups and organizations doing similar work. What is your community? Join our community of learning in the new year! Registrations for the Spring 2025 Capra Course are now open! 👉 https://lnkd.in/gMJAK6xh What you can expect: 🌿12 weekly lectures packed with the wonder of Life as the center of systems thinking, systems being and systems doing 🌿12 weekly summaries, prompts and complimentary materials 🌿Study groups led by experienced alumni (in various languages, days and time zones) Six live sessions with Fritjof 🌿Access to the alumni network platform and the quarterly online gatherings with Fritjof 🌿Be welcomed by a growing community of systems thinkers The Capra Course lectures are pre-recorded and offer subtitles and summaries in English, Spanish, Italian and soon they will also come with Portuguese subtitles and summaries.

A note from Dr. Fritjof Capra after the recent U.S. Election... After the shock of the presidential election in the United States, I still feel that the emergence of a systemic and ecological understanding of life is a central characteristic of our era. However, it is not a smooth process. In my life, I have seen scientific and cultural revolutions, backlashes, and wild pendulum swings. The re-election of Donald Trump is a powerful political backlash. In these troubled times, an inspiring passage from Margaret Wheatley's book Who Do We Choose To Be? comes to my mind. “It is possible in this time of profound disruption," Wheatley writes, "for leadership to be a noble profession that contributes to the common good. It is possible, as we face the fearful complexity of life-destroying problems, to experience recurring moments of grace and joy... It is possible to use our influence and power to create islands of sanity in the midst of a raging destructive sea.” I feel that this is what we are doing with our Capra Course community. As we are expanding our island of sanity, we increase not only its size but also the community's diversity, complexity, and sophistication. The more we interconnect, the stronger will be our resilience in this latest political turbulence. Fritjof Capra . .
