Is it ever ok for a Captain to deduct from a crew member’s salary for lost or damaged items? This is the question I was asked for this month’s Ask Captain Kelly in Dockwalk and I say - absolutely not! When you own a yacht, that is part of the cost of doing business - accidents happen. Of course crew members should always take care for them not to happen, but when they do, it should not come out of their personal salary unless that was agree upon in the original contract.
