Exclusive: Captions, a New York-based startup offering AI video editing and creation tools, has made its first acquisition — Alpaca. 🗽CEO William Buchwalter is joining as a research engineer and jobs were offered to all six of the startup’s employees. 💰Captions and AlpacaML share Index Ventures as an investor. AlpacaML raised $4 million with Index as lead, and the firm also led Captions' Series C round earlier this year. ✨ Separately, Drew Jaegle, formerly a research scientist at Google DeepMind, has joined as head of AI. 📈Captions CEO Gaurav Misra says the company is focused on investing $100 million into training its foundation model through the end of 2025. The 65-person company is also actively hiring for more than 30 open roles. 👀Captions is looking at more acquisitions, particularly machine learning companies with expertise in model training, infrastructure and inference. Months back, we committed to investing $100M in AI research. Today, we have two big updates on that front. We’re excited to share that DeepMind alum Drew Jaegle has joined our team as our Head of AI, and we’ve acquired Alpaca. At DeepMind, Drew led efforts on multimodal representation and generative models for music and creative tools, developing the Perceiver family of architectures, and building the AI music generation model, Lyria. Drew’s leadership will be pivotal as we expand our team of 15 talented researchers. The acquisition of AlpacaML will allow us to continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with generative video. The team raised $4.2M in seed funding led by Index Ventures, and built an AI rendering engine that transforms visuals, thumbnails, and images into concept sketches.
