Big things are happening in Kona! 🌊☀️ Construction is in full swing for Captura’s 1000-ton-per-year pilot facility at NELHA's HOST Park in stunning Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. We’ve wrapped up site prep, and the first major subsystem—the Electrodialysis system—has officially landed. Pictured here is our Mechanical Design Engineer Alexander Deutsch, who—along with others from our team—will be working on the ground in Hawaii over the next few months to bring this project to life. Tough gig, right? 😉 Operations are targeted to kick off by the end of January, but we couldn’t resist sharing a sneak peek. Stay tuned for more updates! #TeamCaptura #ClimateTech #CarbonRemoval #KonaBound

Harnessing the power of the ocean to heal the climate.
About us
The ocean is an immensely powerful force of nature, and our greatest ally to reverse the tides on climate change. By studying the planet’s natural cycles, Captura designed a solution that removes CO2 from the ocean and harnesses its ability to heal the climate—a process known as Direct Ocean Capture. Developed and proven in Caltech’s laboratories, our unique Direct Ocean Capture technology runs with just two ingredients: seawater and renewable electricity. It extracts CO2 directly from seawater to be permanently stored or reused. This amplifies the natural equilibrium between the ocean and atmosphere, drawing carbon out of the air and into the ocean to rebalance. Captura’s approach requires no rare-Earth minerals, adds nothing to the ocean, and leaves no chemicals behind. It’s a low-cost, large-scale carbon removal solution that is environmentally sound.

Ending the week on a positive note: Yesterday, U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) introduced the Carbon Dioxide Removal Investment Act in the U.S. Senate. This important bipartisan legislation proposes a new, technology-neutral tax credit designed to accelerate the growth of the U.S. carbon removal industry. It’s a potential win-win-win: as a technology-inclusive policy, it would support U.S. innovation and competitiveness by enabling more technologies and companies to thrive; it would deliver meaningful climate benefits; and drive significant economic growth and high-quality job creation nationwide. We applaud Senators Murkowski and Bennet for their leadership and thank everyone across the industry who has worked to develop and progress this important legislation. While the bill still has a long way to go, it represents a critical step for the industry and for U.S. leadership in the carbon removal sector. It was an honor to be the first Top 20 Finalist to host the #XPRIZECarbonRemoval team for a site visit. With less than 6 months remaining in this global competition, our team has been all-in, driving forward and scaling our #DirectOceanCapture solution. From operating our pilots to expanding our R&D and MRV programs—and now constructing our new 1,000-ton-per-year facility in Hawaii. We’re incredibly excited to be on this journey alongside 19 other innovative teams, each committed to delivering real, scalable solutions to address the climate challenge.
It's been an exciting and busy few months in the field with the 20 Finalists of the #XPRIZECarbonRemoval! We just passed the halfway point of finals testing, 10 site visits down, and 10 to go. I'm behind sharing all the amazing and challenging work they are doing, but I will start at the beginning when we kicked off the adventure at Captura a few months ago. Thank you Steve Oldham and team for being the brave volunteers to go first and gracious hosts! Captura is an exciting Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) company with research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) efforts in Los Angeles and Hawaii. They are also working on a pilot plant in Norway in partnership with Equinor and plan to sequester CO2 at the Northern Lights facilities – the world’s first open-source CO2 transport and storage infrastructure.

Captura had a blast at NELHA's 50th Anniversary Open House in beautiful Kailua-Kona! With nearly 900 attendees, it was a pleasure meeting so many engaged individuals and connecting with fellow ocean science innovators from the region. We’re grateful for the warm community welcome and look forward to deepening our local partnerships as we begin installing our 1000-ton-per-year pilot facility next month. Big things are on the horizon, and we’re thrilled to be part of this journey towards a more sustainable future. #OceanInnovation #DirectOceanCapture #NELHA50 #CommunityPartnerships
Thank you for helping us celebrate this wonderful milestone! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making our 50th Anniversary Open House a resounding success! We were overwhelmed by the response, with nearly 900 people visiting our mauka campus building alone. The positive feedback has been incredible, and people are eager to learn more about HOST Park and its tenants. Who would have thought? A special thanks to Matsuyama’s for their generous donation of delicious bentos and musubis. Not only did their food delight our guests, but the profits also went to West Hawaii Explorations Academy. We’re also grateful for their support in allowing us to display our banner on their property. Thank you to the entire Matsuyama ohana! A BIG MAHALO to our participating clients and partners! ICYMI – Captura’s CEO, Steve Oldham, was recently interviewed by Molly Wood for Everybody in the Pool Podcast. Listen in to learn more about Captura’s unique carbon removal approach and how we plan to achieve large, climate-relevant scale, while protecting the health of the ocean ecosystem.
Business journalist and startup investor Molly Wood hosts Everybody in the Pool, a podcast about the companies, people and products solving the climate crisis.
New drop: In the latest episode of Everybody in the Pool, host Molly Wood explores an intriguing method of carbon capture and removal with Steve Oldham, CEO of Captura. Steve shares insights on the critical role these technologies play in achieving our climate goals. He breaks down the difference between carbon capture—aimed at turning off the "taps" of CO2 emissions—and carbon removal, which actively extracts CO2 from the atmosphere. 🌍 Captura is at the forefront of this innovation, leveraging the ocean's natural ability to capture CO2 through a process called electrodialysis. Captura says its method is designed to be environmentally friendly, ensuring the health of our oceans remains intact. 🌊✨ Tune in to learn how we can work together for a sustainable future! https://lnkd.in/gzPGeUs6 #CarbonCapture #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Podcast #Innovation #OceanHealth
