Significant progress at COP29 Azerbaijan! Azerbaijan’s presidency has secured the early endorsement of crucial methodological standards under Article 6. After years of stalled negotiations, this marks a long-awaited step towards operationalizing the Paris Agreement’s carbon crediting mechanism. While the approval has sparked mixed reactions regarding governance and transparency, it’s clear the carbon markets community sees this as a pivotal development. At Carbonmark, we believe such advancements underscore the importance of robust, transparent standards in shaping the future of climate action.
BREAKING: Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency secured an early endorsement of key methodological standards under Article 6 during Monday's opening plenary, driven to action by two years of failure at the annual UN climate summit to move forward on the Paris Agreement's carbon crediting mechanism. Despite resistance from some parties, the standards brought into force ahead of the summit in Baku, which began Monday, have been approved by national diplomats and are now formally endorsed. Many international carbon markets participants welcomed the move as a significant step towards operationalising the Paris Agreement crediting mechanism, while those concerned have cited a disregard for governance processes and transparency. One Ocean, One World 🌊 When we think of our planet, we often see maps that divide the land masses into continents. But have you ever thought of our world from the ocean’s perspective? Perhaps that inspired South African-American geophysicist and oceanographer Dr. Athelstan F. Spilhaus to create a seawater-focused map of Earth in 1942, centered on Antarctica. This image provides a unique way to view our world as one big, interconnected ocean, showing how our seas link every continent and corner of the globe. This perspective is more than just a different way of looking at geography—it’s a reminder of the vital role our ocean plays in our ecosystem and climate. The Ocean and Climate Change 🌊 The ocean acts as Earth’s largest carbon sink, absorbing about 30% of human-emitted carbon dioxide and more than 90% of the excess heat generated by greenhouse gases. It regulates our climate, influences weather patterns, and provides oxygen for breathing. Protecting and understanding our oceans is crucial in the fight against climate change. But our oceans are under threat. Rising temperatures, acidification, and pollution are putting immense pressure on marine ecosystems. As we tackle climate change, we must consider ocean-based solutions, from restoring blue carbon ecosystems to innovative research on ocean alkalinity enhancement. This map is a visual reminder: our ocean is not a series of separate waters. It’s a single, interconnected body that binds us all. Thank you, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, for the image!
