Shipping alliances are shaking up for the first time since 2017. The three main partnerships containing the 10 major shipping companies are reorganising next year, and the changes are significant: 🔵 2M Alliance to end – The 10-year partnership between Maersk and MSC will come to an end in January 2025. 🔵 New Gemini Alliance – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will work together under a new alliance. 🔵 THE Alliance to become Premier Alliance – With Hapag Lloyd allying with Maersk, ONE, Yang Ming and HMM are restructuring to three under a new name. 🔵 MSC goes alone – MSC will operate independently with a new network of direct port-to-port services. 🔵 Ocean Alliance will remain the same – CMA CGM, Cosco, OOCL and Evergreen will continue to work under the same name. We’ll expand more on what this means for shippers as we find out, but the key takeaway is that the new alliances will be offering a greater number of services from February 2025 onwards.

Special day today celebrating Jamie Whyatt being with Cardinal Global Logistics for 25 years, half his life! When Jamie joined Cardinal, we were two years in and he was employee number 7! Jamie taught me a valuable lesson after 1 year of being with the business that has shaped my whole business philosophy. He became so important to us within that first year that I soon became paranoid that he was thinking of leaving us. So much so that I followed him home after work, thinking he was going to an interview. Crazy, I know! Sat outside his house and, in that moment, appreciating his brilliance and his importance to us, I got out of my car, knocked on his door and told him the whole story. I remember him telling me that he was super happy and wasn’t looking to go anywhere. But my awakening was real, and on the spot offered him 10% of the business. You can imagine, he was quite happy. But so was I, and since that day I have always known that the best way to grow a business is by sharing it. Thank you for 25 great years, Jamie x

⚠️ ILA strikes imminent in the US With the 30th September deadline fast approaching, and still no agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, a strike is looking increasingly likely. A labour dispute of this scale will cause significant congestion across the entire American supply chain. For both our LCL and FCL clients, this means we’ll be forced to introduce an emergency surcharge for all goods departing or discharging in the US from the 1st October 2024. We will also be forced to pass on any charges caused by the strike per the payment terms of the Bill of Lading. These charges could relate to: - Demurrage - Detention - Storage - Chassis While the above list is not exhaustive, it illustrates the scale of the disruption. There’s still time for negotiations to be settled, so we will continue to monitor the situation and confirm closer to the time whether such a surcharge will be necessary. We thank you for your understanding and continued support.
