High salinity poses a major challenge for wastewater treatment and potable reuse. Traditional methods like reverse osmosis (RO) can effectively reduce salinity but often create brine waste streams that are difficult to manage. In a recent Treatment Plant Operator - TPOMag.com - Wastewater treatment news, technical articles & products. interview, Dr. Eva Steinle-Darling, Carollo's water reuse technical practice director, introduces Ion-Exchange-Based Advanced Treatment (XBAT) as a game-changing alternative. As Eva explains, “XBAT removes up to 50% of salinity while also addressing TOC, nitrate, bromide, and more—all without the drawbacks of RO’s brine waste.” This innovative technology uses suspended ion exchange (SIX® - developed by PWNT) paired with softening to tackle some of water treatment’s toughest challenges. With promising results in pilot testing, XBAT is paving the way for more sustainable and effective solutions in water reuse. Curious about how XBAT works and its potential impact on water reuse? California’s water challenges call for bold action, and Los Angeles is stepping up with one of the most ambitious water recycling projects in the nation: the Donald C. Tillman Advanced Water Purification Facility (DCT AWPF). This $740-million project will create a sustainable, drought-resistant supply of purified water to serve over 250,000 residents in the San Fernando Valley. As the Owner’s Advisor for the DCT AWPF, Carollo is proud to support Los Angeles in advancing water reuse, reducing reliance on imported water, and strengthening water resiliency for generations to come. We’re thrilled to see this groundbreaking project featured in a recent CBS News Los Angeles segment. Hear from Jesus Gonzalez, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Manager of Water Resources, about how this facility is setting a new standard for sustainability in the water industry. As California’s Central Valley continues to face declining groundwater levels, finding a sustainable solution for agriculture is more important than ever. In the latest issue of Water Online's Water Innovations, Carollo’s Christina Romano, PE and Keith Corcoran, along with Mike Crooks from the Sacramento Area Sewer District (SacSewer), dive into the innovative Harvest Water Program—a pioneering recycled water initiative providing drought-resistant water for irrigation and ecosystem benefits. Their article, "Pioneering recycling program quenches California's thirst for agricultural water," explores how SacSewer’s Harvest Water Program is transforming wastewater into a reliable resource for local growers, restoring groundwater levels, and supporting ecological benefits in the region. This program doesn’t just supply recycled water—it also fosters trust with the agricultural community, with over 100 growers already on board. Scott Parker, a Carollo senior vice president and local grower, puts it best: “We’re not just managing water. We’re cultivating trust.” To learn more, read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gpgaSwP2
