URGENT: Governor Hochul is rolling back protections against solitary confinement, and we must take action. The HALT Solitary Confinement Law was enacted to end the torture of prolonged isolation. Now, Governor Hochul and DOCCS have illegally suspended key provisions, subjecting incarcerated people—including those with serious mental health needs—to inhumane conditions. Since February 20, prisons across New York State have been on lockdown: *People locked in cells for 24+ hours a day *Visits from family & lawyers canceled indefinitely *Denied food, medication, and medical care *No access to education, programs, or even heat & electricity This is a crisis—and we must act now to demand Governor Hochul restore the rights and dignity of incarcerated people. CASES has signed onto a letter opposing these inhumane rollbacks and will continue to advocate for incarcerated people. You can help by calling or emailing your legislators today! The choice is clear. CASES most intensive mental health treatment programs cost 1/10th of detaining someone at Rikers. Why should New York City taxpayers be forced to spend half a million dollars per person per year on a system that just leads to more homelessness, unemployment and violence? When over half the jail population has a diagnosed mental illness, investing in community-based treatment saves money and lives. #CloseRikers #AlternativesToIncarceration #TreatmentNotJail #CommunitiesNotCages

The Governor's recent budget proposal broke our hearts —again. Instead of including a full 7.8% investment in human services, she proposed a 2.1% “inflation adjustment," which isn't nearly enough to fund essential programs or livable wages for nonprofit human services workers. From February 10 – 14, let's show our sector and communities some love! Send a Valentine's email (https://lnkd.in/d3J5ud4G) to your State Legislators and demand that they fight for us in the budget by supporting: ✅ A 7.8% investment in human services ✅ S1580/A2590 to ensure ALL nonprofit human services programs are eligible for State cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) funding ✅ S3953 (Wage Board Legislation) to investigate the pay gap between nonprofit and government human services workers
