Today we celebrate Saint Sebastian! Saint Sebastian was a Christian martyr who was killed by the Roman emperor Diocletian in 287 AD for his faith. He was a Roman soldier who converted many of his fellow soldiers and a governor. He is the patron saint of archers, athletes, and soldiers.

Altar servers lead the way for the priest to go up to the altar to begin Mass. They hold the Bible and lectionary open so that the priest can recite the daily prayers out loud. They receive the gifts of the altar from the priest before the offertory begins. They ring the bells during the holiest part of the Mass, the consecration. The takeaway is that this unique experience — to sit on the altar, not with the congregants — elevates the role being performed. According to the CARA report on the Ordination Class of 2023, 72% of prospective priests have been altar servers, while about half served as lectors and 40% served as extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist. https://buff.ly/45q8hTE

1/19/2025 Gospel: John 2:1-11 There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from — although the servers who had drawn the water knew —, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. https://buff.ly/3iBS9Ga

I do not know anyone (in modern times) who desired to become a priest to become wealthy, but did so because they wanted to help people attain the heavenly kingdom. In fact, although diocesan priests do not take a vow of poverty, they are to live simply as the law of the Church states (Canon 282). https://buff.ly/2NJhno0 You should never hesitate to ask for prayers, a sacrament, or a priest’s time for because you “can’t afford it”.
