  • New Zealand Cattle - Industry leaders have had their say on a petition which has called for an inquiry into virtual fencing and its impacts on animal welfare. It was put forward by Golden Bay dairy farmer Tim Rhodes of Rhodes Farming Partnership. When Rhodes spoke to the Petitions Committee about his first encounter with virtual fencing through a magazine article, he said he was “horrified and disgusted”. “Why on earth would they publicise such a gross thing … what right have they got to taint everyone’s milk with cruelty. Yuck.” His main concerns were that the technology could have a long-term “brainwashing effect” and the electrical cue of the collars could impact animal welfare. “Let the cows be cows and don’t make them behave like robots. They already know what to do and what is best for them. Why mess with their heads?” A virtual fencing company Rhodes mentioned was Halter New Zealand. The company’s system was delivered through a collar which moved cattle by sounds that guide them from left to right. It also monitored their health, rumination, heat and location. The system worked as a virtual fence — if cows step over a virtual boundary, they are first guided back by sound, and only if they ignore those cues are they given a low energy shock 100 times weaker than an electric fence. It also allowed cows to walk themselves to the milking shed. See https://lnkd.in/gccKbD-H

🚀 Exciting times ahead for Australia! We're pioneering a bold view for the future with the development of high-speed heavy rail (HSHR) networks. This transformative vision is set to revolutionize both our agricultural potential and military logistics capabilities. 🌾🛤️ 🌏 By linking fertile farming regions directly to urban centres and ports, HSHR will ensure that Australian produce is fresher and more competitive in Asian markets. Plus, these networks will also serve dual purposes by enhancing our national defence logistics, ready to swiftly deploy military resources when needed. 🏭 Each hub along the rail will be a powerhouse of activity, featuring advanced manufacturing facilities that drive innovation and boost local economies. This strategic infrastructure not only supports our growth ambitions but also secures our future in a rapidly changing world. 🤝 With potential for American investment and collaboration through AUKUS, this initiative will also strengthen international ties and bring cutting-edge technology and resources to our shores. 💡 As we embark on this journey, we're committed to harnessing our national assets and the spirit of innovation that defines Australia. Together, we're forging a prosperous, secure, and sustainable future. Join us in shaping tomorrow! Bushfires in the Northern Territory have already burnt about 4.6 million hectares this month — the equivalent of about 20 times the size of the Australian Capital Territory. Several cattle stations are battling dangerous blazes this afternoon as conditions worsen. Amber Driver from Elkedra Station, 270 kilometres south-east of Tennant Creek, said they were dealing with a fire front that was 50 kilometres wide. "We've lost a lot of country and feed [for our cattle] … and of course the fire is still burning," she said. "We've lost a lot of fences and there's been a lot of damage, but at the moment you'd only be speculating on animal [deaths]. That will come out later when we have time." A number of fires started last week following a spate of dry lightning strikes. See https://lnkd.in/gGWkKkGX Cattle Corporation

In a groundbreaking trial, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), in collaboration with industry partners, has delivered a transformative initiative at the Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange (TRLX). Employing cutting-edge 5G technology and artificial intelligence (AI), this project automates the traditionally labour-intensive task of cattle counting, potentially reshaping the future of livestock exchanges. Over the course of 12 months, the trial showcased the seamless integration of 5G, AI, image processing, and cloud and edge computing services, eliminating human error and enabling real-time monitoring and reporting of cattle numbers with unprecedented accuracy. This innovative solution, developed in collaboration with Nokia, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and TPG Telecom, has the potential to revolutionise not only cattle counting but also various aspects of livestock management, including security, identification, tracking, and health monitoring. With the prospect of significant economic and productivity boosts, this initiative exemplifies the pivotal role of technology in driving operational improvements and cost savings within the agricultural sector. • As the world evolves so does the definition of what's normal and that includes how livestock producers manager their cattle, which is exactly what a farm at the University of Kentucky is doing. "Finding cows, finding calves. This can be an essential tool for a lot of producers, so we're just trying to think about, we have this device that's commercially available, could this be something they utilize on their farm?" “What we found was if we fly with a single drone about 30 foot above ground level, the cattle don't seem to care too much about the drone being within their vicinity. We also found if we fly multiple drones they do respond and flight pattern does matter." Chemicals are put inside the large drone to help maintain the health of the pastures. "Going along fence lines, spraying some herbicides, you know, getting rid of weeds, so this could be a very effective tool for some more cattle operations across the state." The drones will also provide 3D imaging of the cows to gather weight and health estimates without farmers physically handling the animal. Jackson describes this as a revolutionary solution. Additionally, in the Fall season, thermal imaging will allow farmers to see Angus cows clearly as the day grows darker. The cows also wear a belt that monitors their heart rate as the drones are being tested and a collar that helps to track their location. See https://lnkd.in/gFaJhc7n #Cattle Michael Sharpe

  • In a world-first gaming experience, Territory entrepreneurs Nathan Groves and Chas "CJ" Cole have created a simulation that allows players to virtually muster cattle across the Northern Territory's iconic landscapes. In the game, Pasture: The Livestock Simulator, developed by NT's Salty Games, players dive deep into the life on a station, taking on the challenge of mustering hundreds of cattle in vast paddocks, and navigating through the rugged terrain of the Territory. Salty Games Creative Director Nathan Groves - who grew up in the Katherine Region and whose family name is synonymous with the pastoral industry in the NT - said the game's focus was on providing an authentic simulation of life on an cattle station in the Territory. "This game is not just about farming - it's about our community, sustainability and the beauty of our home," he said. Now the development of Pasture has been bolstered by $1.5 million in seed-stage funding delivered by the Paspalis Co-Investment Fund - which is jointly supported by the Northern Territory's Local Jobs Fund and Paspalis. https://lnkd.in/gVv4sfRc
