Cayuga Health and Arnot Health are proud to celebrate Black Legacy Month by recognizing the future of medicine and highlighting the remarkable residents shaping our healthcare system. Over the next four weeks, we will introduce residents who are making a difference in our communities, sharing their personal journeys, inspirations, and aspirations in the field of medicine. This week, we highlight Alexis Bromley, MD, an Emergency Medicine Resident Physician at Arnot Health, who has been part of the system for over a year and a half. Diversity and inclusion play a crucial role in equitable healthcare. Dr. Bromley emphasizes the need for cultural competence and self-reflection. “By fostering a culturally competent environment, we can improve communication, reduce health disparities, and enhance the overall patient experience,” she says. One way to start is by taking an implicit bias test, available at Harvard’s Project Implicit. “This self-reflection exercise helps us identify and address unconscious biases that can unintentionally impact our interactions,” she explains.

Introducing our AMHL Panelist, Herb Alexander! Herb Alexander is the Interim Vice President of Human Resources at Cayuga Health System, where he has been a key leader for the past four years. He began his tenure as Chief Diversity Officer before being promoted to Chief Diversity & Learning Officer, then Assistant Vice President for People & Culture, and now Vice President of Human Resources. Throughout his career, Herb has been dedicated to advancing health equity, addressing the social drivers of health, and reducing disparities within Tompkins County and the broader region. Under his leadership, the Diversity & Inclusion department at Cayuga Health actively supports numerous community initiatives, educational programs, and awareness campaigns to drive meaningful change. Herb holds a Bachelor of Science in History and a Master of Strategic Business Leadership (M.S.L.), bringing a strong foundation in both historical analysis and organizational strategy to his work. Beyond his role at Cayuga Health, he serves on the boards of the Human Services Coalition, Roberts Wesleyan University, the Tompkins Chamber of Commerce, and the Care Compass Collaborative. His professional background includes seven years in higher education, where he held various leadership positions, including Associate Dean of Students and Head Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. In addition to his professional work, Herb is the co-host of Young, Black & Figuring It Out, a podcast that explores personal and professional growth. Arnot Health and Cayuga Health formally announced their new affiliation, which will now operate under the name Centralus Health. “This partnership represents a shared commitment to expanding access to high-quality care for the communities we serve,” said Dr. Martin Stallone, CEO of Cayuga Health and CEO of Centralus Health. “Together, we are strengthening our ability to offer a wider array of services, reach underserved populations, and invest in the future of healthcare delivery - locally.
