🇫🇮 Fantastic Finland: A Growing Hub for Carbon Removal With 7 companies and 6 projects, Finland is emerging as a key player in durable carbon removal—not just in the Nordic region, but across Europe. 📈 Finland’s ambitious climate plan aims for net zero by 2035, targeting the removal of 21Mt of CO₂e by then. Biochar dominates its CDR market, with Finnish suppliers selling over 28,000 tonnes by the end of Q3 2024. The country also leads in research and innovation, driving CDR advancements alongside its Nordic neighbors. 🌍 From global CDR registry Puro.earth to Carbo Culture, home to one of Europe’s largest biochar plants with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per year, Finland is setting benchmarks for scaling global carbon removal. 🤝 Notably, Carbofex was the first supplier in CDR.fyi's database, recording a transaction of 100 tonnes of CDR with Swiss Re over five years ago. 🙌 A big shoutout to Finnish innovators like CarbonaideSoletair PowerNordic Impact OySoilwatch, and Ekovilla Oy for their vital contributions to the CDR ecosystem. 📌 Earlier this year, we launched a new feature allowing organizations to map their CDR projects and facilities. How does its decisive stance on durable CDR support its net zero commitments? What are some of the key lessons from its approach? To answer those questions and more, in this CDR.fyi Insight, we explore Microsoft’s durable CDR engagement and synthesize what other companies can emulate from their approach and strategy. Here are a few highlights: 1. Market Leadership: Microsoft has demonstrated unparalleled market leadership in contracted volume, positioning itself as a significant influencer in the CDR industry. 2. Strategic Investments: Microsoft’s purchases include both large-scale, long-term contracts and a diversified CDR portfolio of emerging CDR technologies. 3. Driving Industry Standards: Microsoft is not just participating in the CDR market but actively shaping industry standards and practices. 4. Bullets before Cannonballs: Microsoft’s purchases have included smaller, exploratory investments in emerging CDR technologies while prioritizing “anchoring scale.” 5.
