We are so sad to hear of the passing of Katey O'Neill, one of CEC's first staff members in the early 1970s. Katey worked with former CEC Co-Executive Hal Conklin on CEC's Survival Times magazine and played a pivotal role in one of our first publications, Agriculture in the City. Her partner, Larry Tower, was instrumental in creating one of CEC's first gardening projects, El Mirasol Farm.

Adding solar to low-income housing is a win for both the climate and the community ☀️ California's Solar on Multifamily Affordable Housing (SOMAH) makes the switch to solar more affordable by providing financial incentives for solar panels on low-income housing. Installing solar with SOMAH equitably lowers greenhouse gas emissions, promotes climate resilience and independence, and provides significant savings for underserved populations over time. CEC, with CNSI, hosted the Living with Fire Summit on Wednesday. Leaders from research, fire response, technology, and other sectors came together to discuss how to collaboratively improve wildfire resilience across our region. The event was a great success — attendees demystified terminology, generated ideas, and identified easily implementable steps for wildfire resilience, like "home hardening."

CEC is thrilled that Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1053, banning all plastic bags at grocery and convenience store checkout lanes starting in 2026. 💚 CEC supported this law, as we have supported and advocated for many state and regional laws that reduce single-use plastic at the source. Plastic has become a significant part of the fossil fuel crisis, as recognized by Attorney General Rob Bonta in his lawsuit against ExxonMobil. With less than 10 percent of plastic recycled, it’s clear that we are not going to recycle our way out of the human health, marine health, and litter impacts of plastic and that corporations need to be held accountable.
