Congratulations to dean, Schmidt chair, and Professor Jill Kolesar on being selected by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) as a #SprintForWomensHealth awardee. The University of Iowa will receive $10 million in funding through the initiative’s launchpad track for later-stage development health solutions and will be used to develop a novel approach to combating ovarian cancer. “We have developed a new therapy that is effective and has few or no adverse effects. This grant supports the first clinical trial of this therapy and the next step in making it available to women who need it desperately,” said Kolesar. The ARPA-H #SprintForWomensHealth is addressing critical unmet challenges in women’s health, championing transformative innovations, and tackling health conditions that uniquely or disproportionately affect women. Get to know one of this year's CBB Conference speakers, Dr. Jana Shen, Professor and Codirector of Computer-Aided Drug Design Center, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Dr. Jana Shen's academic journey spans three continents. She earned her Diplom Chemie from Bergische Universität Wuppertal in Germany, a Master's in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Calgary, Canada, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. After her postdoctoral work at the Scripps Research Institute, she began her independent career at the University of Oklahoma in 2007. In 2012, Jana joined the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and was promoted to full professor in 2019. Her research group combines molecular dynamics, quantum mechanics, and machine learning to investigate inhibitor and opioid structure-activity relationships and advance proteomewide covalent drug discovery.
