📢 NEW STUDY 🌍⚡ A new study in Nature Sustainability by Raul Bajo Buenestado, António Miguel Bento, Dan Kaffine, and Zissis Marmarelis explores the link between energy decarbonization and market vulnerability. Despite Europe's progress in adopting carbon-free electricity, the 2021–2022 natural gas price surge exposed key vulnerabilities in electricity markets. Key findings: 🔹 Aggressive electricity decarbonization does not increase vulnerability to natural gas price shocks. 🔹 Countries with higher shares of wind and solar energy face slightly more vulnerability, due to their reliance on natural gas for balance. 🔹 Uniform policies, like the EU price cap, may be insufficient—tailored, country-specific solutions are crucial. The study emphasizes that decarbonization goals can align with energy security and price stability, fostering public trust in the energy transition. 📖 How do natural gas price shocks impact electricity prices in Europe? 🔗 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/gGSueJAk #EnergyTransition #Decarbonization #NaturalGas #RenewableEnergy #BakerEnergy Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy Rice University

As 2024 draws to a close, the global oil market faces pivotal questions. At our recent event, Baker Institute fellow Mark Finley led an in-depth discussion on the trends shaping oil supply, demand, and prices in the coming year. The conversation explored how U.S. policy and investment shifts might impact supply, electric vehicle adoption’s role in shaping global demand, and the ongoing strategies of OPEC+ as they balance price stability with market share amidst geopolitical tensions. Claudio Galimberti provided a long-term perspective, noting that by 2030, OPEC countries will be the primary drivers of supply growth. For Saudi Arabia and Russia, the strategy is about patience—balancing current cuts with future potential. Learn more about the key takeaways and insights from the event. 🔗 https://bit.ly/3DVkpTp

❄️ Reflecting on the February 2021 Freeze With temperatures in Texas dipping below freezing again this week, many are reminded of the devastating freeze of February 2021. In the aftermath, experts Peter Hartley, Ken Medlock, and Shih Yu (Elsie) Hung from Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy Center for Energy Studies analyzed the event in their working paper: “ERCOT Froze in February 2021. What happened? Why did it happen? Can it happen again?” Their analysis explores the causes, implications, and the risk of future grid failures. As Texans face another cold snap, understanding these insights is more critical than ever. 📖 Read the full paper: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/drVZSFFS #TexasFreeze #EnergyGrid #ERCOT #BakerEnergy Rice University
