Congratulations to this year’s Global Engagement Grant awardees! These grants provide funding to support novel global health initiatives. Global Engagement Grants are unique in that they’re open to UMN faculty and staff. These grants are also meant for projects that don’t fall into one category of education, research or capacity building; in many cases, the projects blend work from multiple disciplines. Just published: "From short-term engagements to meaningful and equitable global health partnerships." Check out this article from CGHSR Executive Director Shailendra Prasad, Eunice Kamaara and Bruce Compton on the importance of mutual respect and understanding in global health engagements. “The essence of global health collaborations lies in the recognition that no single entity holds all the answers. Instead, it is through collective effort, mutual respect, and shared vision that impactful and sustainable health improvements can be realized.” Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eEJBH_rD

Great to be among Obstetric Fistula surgeons and women’s health champions from so many diverse countries at the 9th International Society of Obstetric Fistula Society conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is inspiring to see this community come together to share best practices on how to provide holistic care for women affected by this devastating birth injury. A privilege to learn from Dr Fekade, master fistula surgeon and trainer and the first graduate from our Hamlin Fistula / Mekelle University Urogynecology fellowship program . Obstetric Fistula is completely preventable with access to safe and timely obstetric care and therefore should never exist in this day and age when we know how to provide safe obstetric care. To learn more about the impact of obstetric fistula and why it continues to plague women in low resourced countries, listen to women telling their stories on our short film that was an official selection on the 2024 WHO All health film festival. https://lnkd.in/gbqx2SSW Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Worldwide Fistula Fund

A Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility-affiliated faculty member is working to ensure all patients, no matter their sexual orientation or health status, receive the same quality of care when they visit the doctor. Kumi Smith, PhD, says that people living with HIV and members of the LGBTQ community are more likely to experience stigma from healthcare providers, resulting in either unnecessary care or a lack thereof. Smith, an associate professor in the UMN School of Public Health’s Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, has received an R01 award to study the issue in China, and hopes her research will create better health outcomes for patients around the globe.
