In the last decade, we've seen a monumental rise in app-based work, like Uber, DoorDash, Instacart etc. This type of work is otherwise known as "gig work" and it's time for policymakers to take a closer look at the implications of this type of work on workers' rights and overall equity. The report highlights several key policy recommendations to promote equity and protect workers in the gig economy. Here are three of the main recommendations: 1. Advocate for policies that prevent corporations from misclassifying workers as independent contractors. This reclassification would ensure that gig workers receive access to critical benefits and protections, such as minimum wage, overtime pay, and health insurance. 2. Establish systems that allow workers to carry benefits like health insurance, retirement savings, and paid leave across jobs and employers. This would address the unique challenges of workers with multiple gig roles or fluctuating employment. 3. Increase government oversight and enforcement of labor laws to hold corporations accountable. This includes addressing wage theft, ensuring safe working conditions, and penalizing companies that exploit loopholes to avoid providing worker protections. Read the full report here:
