CDC has confirmed the first severe case of H5N1 Bird Flu in the US. The investigation of the source of exposure is ongoing, but preliminary information points to this as being the first reported case in a person infected from a backyard flock. CORI maintains that the risk to farm workers is high and the risk to other people in contact with infected animals is moderate. For more details and guidance on how to reduce risk see below. 🔔 HPAI A(H5) Scenario-Based Human Health Risk Assessment Updated as of December 10, 2024 The recent developments show the continued progression of the current outbreak and highlight concerns regarding the potential for future reassortment but do not change the current risk scenario. For the risk scenario to increase, human-to-human transmission would need to be confirmed. For the risk level to decrease, there would need to be a decline in human cases and a reduction in opportunities for reassortment (eg widespread utilization of PPE by farm workers and others in contact with animals and/or a decline in animal cases). 🚀 Revolutionizing Disease Forecasting 🚀 “Insight Net members are piloting analytical techniques that combine novel data sources to guide surveillance and inform decision-making during outbreaks. The end goal is to create something akin to a National Weather Service for disease.” - Chris Berdik, author of Insight Net: A National Weather Service for Disease? In a recent Harvard Public Health article, science journalist Chris Berdik highlights how CORI’s work as part of Insight Net is driving public health forward. By enhancing outbreak reporting and refining short-term forecasting, CORI’s innovations are paving the way for better-informed responses to global health challenges. CORI's HPAI A(H5) Scenario-Based Human Health Risk Assessment for the United States was featured in a recent New York Times article by former FDA Commissioner Dr. David Kessler, I Ran Operation Warp Speed. I’m Concerned About Bird Flu. In this powerful piece, Dr. Kessler highlights the growing concern that the virus could become capable of efficient human-to-human transmission, and how the future administration could address this potential threat. See our website for the latest risk assessment, where we highlight the importance of precautions for farmworkers and increased testing.
