While employment and spending reductions from the new administration will have substantial negative impacts on the region, the Washington Region has been underperforming relative to peers and the U.S. as a whole for over a decade in job growth and economic output. Another tangible expression of this underperformance is in terms of median household income. Here, we examine the median household income of selected jurisdictions in the Washington Region and compare them to that of the U.S. overall. While Virginia outperforms DC and Maryland, the District has been the only jurisdiction to record increases in median household income relative to the U.S. from 2011 to 2023. Updated 2/27/2025 - While initial claims for unemployment insurance in D.C. increased 112% from 768 filed in the week ending 1/25/205 (the first week of the new administration) to 1,626 filed in the week ending 2/15/2025, they are down 3.3% from the week prior. It is likely initial claims will climb higher in the coming weeks. Initial uninsurance claims increased in MD and VA are in-line with prior readings. Note - Federal workers are covered by UCFE, and are not included in these data.
