This morning, we heard from the always exceptional Dr. Kerri McDermid, Ed.D. about the critical importance of public education and reclaiming our narrative. Anyone who cares about the future of assessment and accountability should read this fantastic point/counterpoint from Lynn Olson, Thomas Toch, Chad Aldeman, and Dale Chu in Education Next. It’s a model for how a debate can be both respectful and candid; both accessible and encompassing essential technical details. One indicator of the importance of this conversation comes from the Canopy Project, a collaborative research effort stewarded by Center on Reinventing Public Education and Transcend, which recently released survey data from 189 school leaders who described assessment and accountability policies as the #1 policy and ecosystem factor inhibiting their ability to innovate (https://lnkd.in/e5NM4NCX). If we want to reimagine schools to improve experiences and outcomes for all learners, we also need to reimagine assessment and accountability systems. This passage from Olson and Toch especially rang true to me: "Different stakeholders want state tests to serve two distinct, equally legitimate, and largely incompatible roles. Some want the tests to provide policymakers with information on student achievement that’s comparable across schools and school districts, with the goal of holding schools accountable for results. Others want the tests to give educators and families detailed information to improve instruction and monitor individual student progress. States and test developers have tried to reconcile these competing demands, but it has proven impossible to achieve both goals."
