  • Did you know that gardening can boost your mental health, improve your thinking skills and at the same time help the environment? 🪴🌺 Gardens offer countless benefits that go beyond simply beautifying spaces - they play a vital role in promoting social and environmental sustainability. A study from the University of Edinburgh found that gardening can potentially play an important role in keeping the brain alert and reducing cognitive decline 🧠 in the later years of life. The research suggested that engaging in gardening activities is associated with improved cognitive function and a lower risk of conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease (University of Edinburgh, 23 July 2024) So, why don’t you try out gardening in your backyard or gather with your neighbours and set a gardening date at a dedicated green area in your local area? Living in a small, narrow apartment? 🏠 Worry not! Vertical gardening is the new trend. Use trellises for climbing plants, hanging planters for flowers or herbs, or vertical racks and wall-mounted shelves to stack plants. ➡️ For more ideas and information, please take a look at the infographic below created by Center for Sustainability on ways you can practise gardening for the benefit of both yourself and the planet! #gardening #sustainablegardens #sustainability #mentalhealth

  • Have you ever imagined how different our world would have been if it was not for the development and advancement of science in all fields but especially in the fields of ecology, resource management and climate conservation? Improvements in the fields of science have given us access to state-of-the-art health services and quality education. 🌎 👩⚕️ And yet, we’ve reached a point where despite all these sophisticated technologies and amenities we have been provided with, we are called to tackle huge environmental challenges such as air pollution, biodiversity loss and waste management amidst a continuous state of armed conflicts, 🏜️ ⚠️ all because of our irresponsible actions. The progress made in science and technology has not been enough to prevent these pressing issues from escalating and thus leading to severe ecocide. Thus, on this International Week of Science and Peace, we must come together as a global community and as professionals in any relevant field, to find innovative solutions and implement sustainable practices to protect our planet for future generations and guarantee peaceful coexistence among all nations by taking the necessary steps to prevent future conflicts and mistreatment of our planet. Please take a look at the infographics ℹ️ 📖 to get an idea of the negative environmental effects of wars and the ways science can be a driver towards peace! Feel free to like the post and repost it to spread the word! #peace #sustainability #science #peacebuilding #TrustInScience #10November #WorldScienceDayforPeaceandDevelopment

  • 16th of October is a truly important date as we celebrate the World Food Day. Take a moment to reflect. When was the last time you appreciated and expressed your gratitude for being able to enjoy a dish of fresh food? We all tend to take food for granted and mistakenly assume that we will never run out of it. But, we all know that there are people who lack access to food and water and this problem just keeps getting worse and worse. Food is an inalienable human right and essential for a sustainable future. Sustainable in many ways. Without food, our population will decline, children will become malnourished, and farmers will lose their livelihoods as the fast food industry has replaced fresh, organic food. People will be exposed to increasingly serious diseases as genetically modified food is now common practice in the food production sector. Therefore, we do not simply refer to access to food, but to food security, to pure and fresh food available to all citizens. As an organisation that works towards food security and sustainability, we would like to ask you to share your sustainable food practices, local food suppliers/shops/markets, healthy recipes and anything else you consider a valuable resource in terms of food. #worldfoodday #foodforall #EatSustainably #SupportLocal #FoodSafety #WorldFoodDay2024

  • Peace and sustainability intertwine like the roots of a resilient tree, and it is within this fertile soil that NGOs like Center for Sustainability thrive. Our mission to cultivate harmony through carefully designed initiatives and projects is what keeps driving us forward to educate our peers and communities on the critical importance of sustainability in all of its aspects to guarantee a conflict-free nation. Therefore, on this International Day of Peace, we would like to remind you that at the heart of our mission lies a dual commitment: to promote peace and safeguard our planet. Here’s how we do it: The Komposto Initiative: Like alchemists transforming base elements into gold, we turn organic waste into something equally precious—nutrient-rich compost. The Komposto initiative educates communities about composting, encouraging them to see food scraps not as refuse but as potential soil builders. As we reduce landfill waste, we also foster a sense of interconnectedness—a reminder that our actions ripple through ecosystems and impact others. Collaborative Educational Initiatives: We invite individuals, youth centres, and other NGOs to join our chorus. Together, we harmonize efforts, amplifying our impact. Whether it’s a lake clean-up, or a workshop/information day on community safety issues and emergency preparedness, collaboration is our crescendo, especially within our Civil Protection Unit. Our center pulses with purpose—a rhythm of compassion, curiosity, and commitment. As we gather under the same canopy of stars, we recognize that peace and sustainability are not distant ideals; they are the air we breathe, the soil beneath our feet. • Wildfires are a common threat to the safety of both citizens and the atmosphere. Each year we witness extreme wildfires, mainly in the area of Balkans, as well as in the South West of Europe. To name but a few notable big fires, the fires at Mati in Greece in 2018, the Attiki fire in 2024, again in Greece, the Pedrógão Grande fire in 2017, in Portugal and the one in the Serta Mountain, North Macedonia. Climate change and forest fires are heavily interlinked due to a number of factors. Drought, high temperatures, winds, and humidity, all coupled with inconsiderate human practices contribute to the ignition of rapidly spreading wildfires, which in turn pollute our skies. Did you know that numerous hazardous toxic substances are released into the air during a wildfire, one of the most serious ones being particulate matter? This harmful particulate matter can severely impact the environment and the air we breathe. As climate change continues to exacerbate these conditions, we must take action to prevent and mitigate the impact of wildfires on our planet. By implementing sustainable practices and reducing our carbon footprint, we can work towards a healthier future for all. Our organisation is dedicated to promoting education on the prevention and the handling of wildfires by keeping citizens informed and prepared through relevant trainings, talks and lectures with competent authorities and more. On this day, we celebrate the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies by raising awareness about the importance of clean air and the impact of wildfires on air quality. Share your tips, experiences with wildfires or thoughts on the mitigation of air pollution in the comments section and contribute to the protection of our planet and ensure that future generations have access to clean air and blue skies.

  • We are pleased to announce another upcoming project which will be implemented by our Organisation in the upcoming year: Act4Love. 💜 The aim of the project is to raise awareness and prevent (Teen Dating Violence) TDV among 14-18 teenagers by training secondary school teachers and educators on TDV, equipping students with essential skills and critical thinking to confront TDV. By integrating innovative learning methods and tools, the project aims to empower youth in preventing TDV through peer education and foster schools’ potential as protective environments Unfortunately, TDV is quite common among teens’ (12-18)👧 👦 love relationships as many partners suffer from sexual, physical or emotional abuse, stalking and harassment. The effects of TDV can be devastating, leading to long-term physical and emotional consequences for the victims. Young people need to recognize the signs of TDV and seek help if they are in an abusive relationship. Therefore, this upcoming project by CS will play a pivotal role as it will develop comprehensive material which can be used by parents, teachers, educators, youth workers and other relevant stakeholders to raise awareness and provide support while collectively working towards ending TDV and promoting healthy, respectful relationships among teens. Stay tuned, and feel free to share our post with your students, teenage children and any interested party, in general, to help us spread the word and get ready for an amazing and impactful project! 🔔 ❇️ #erasmusproject #teendatingviolence #newproject

  • Have you ever heard of eco-anxiety? Well, that seems to unfortunately be a relatively recent term surrounding the climate change concept since according to an article in Nature Journal researchers aim to investigate how changing temperatures impact mental health across the globe. Often, during informal conversations, whether it is a right decision or not to bring children in these hard times when people witness and suffer extreme weather conditions seems to be a hot topic. The reason for such a thought-provoking discussion lies in the concept of eco-anxiety, climate doom and environmental existential dread. Heavy rainfalls, wildfires, floods, and similar disasters cause people - most importantly the victims of such disasters- a lack of faith, existential crisis and a fear of how we will all be able to survive the ever-increasing hot temperatures. Even worse, climate deniers and climate doomers are convinced that combatting climate change is an already lost battle and we haven’t taken action soon enough! As an organisation dedicated to combating climate change and promoting ways for a more sustainable lifestyle for the betterment of our planet and future generations, we are working towards impactful projects on sustainability, environmental awareness campaigns and educational material to empower individuals to make more informed choices, reverse this ‘glooming’ mood and collectively fight climate change for the sake of ourselves and our future communities. Stay tuned, and keep following our social media to be the first ones to know about our upcoming strategies and initiatives. Meanwhile, you can learn more about eco-anxiety and climate doom and encouraging stories at https://buff.ly/4cOKsrg
