For the past several days, the brightest star over Mitchell County, North Carolina has been the AT&T Flying COW (Cell on Wings). With the deployment of three Flying COWs in the area, capable of covering multiple locations many miles apart, residents of Mitchell, Buncombe, Avery, and Rutherford counties can stay in touch with loved ones, access emergency services, and receive critical updates. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the AT&T Drones & Robotics team has expanded its operations into nighttime missions to provide cellular connectivity to impacted communities. Our Flying COWs have been deployed in nine cities so far, providing essential connectivity while our disaster recovery teams work to restore service. Our team’s expansion into nighttime operations is just another way we are working to provide vital connectivity around the clock for these communities.

In North Carolina DJI heavy lift drones have turned into delivery drones, delivering critical supplies to isolated communities affected by hurricane Helene. Ordinary citizens are flying #BVLOS missions over mountains to deliver supplies to those in need. Video from Shawn Hendrix, via Twitter (linked in comments) It's been amazing seeing the range of support that ordinary citizens have been able to provide to their neighbors in North Carolina, especially when utilizing drone technology. DJI drone technology to be exact. While I believe that we need to rally around and support US drone manufacturers as we work towards product parody with DJI, I believe we still need continued access to DJI drones into the future. Fast deployment and a do anything helpful at all cost mentality of #American citizens is unmatched. Until companies like Zipline, DroneUp, and Wing are operational in areas that are hit with a natural disaster, it will still be the average citizen with off the shelf drones who make the biggest difference when it matters most.

I had the opportunity to capture these aerial shots over the weekend just south of Houston. What a pleasure to see all the hard work and detail that goes into unloading these massive structures.
