About us

Cetus Global is a women-owned professional consulting firm that specializes in intelligence gathering and analysis on political and conflict dynamics worldwide, particularly in West Africa. We provide program and proposal design and technical writing for USAID and other donors; atmospheric and contextual reports for international donors; conflict analysis for academic research; and strategy and activity advising for development and humanitarian activities. Our information products have been used by the State Department, USAID, the World Bank, US Embassies across Africa, a host of development organizations and local NGOs. Cetus founder Laura Sanders brings nearly 20 years of experience in African conflict areas. Ms. Sanders leverages her long-established relationships with government officials, community institutions, and journalists and academics to gain localized insights into crisis trends and growing violent extremism. Other team members round out this experience with particular expertise in the gender, climate, local governance, and media sectors. Together, our key advantage is our network of assets who can provide localized reporting, first-hand insight into trends, perceptions, and political conversations, especially in areas where media and other access is restricted.

On #VeteransDay we honor all our nation’s veterans who have served and sacrificed to protect democracy and freedom around the world. And a heartfelt thank you to the more than 7,000 veterans who currently work at the Department, many of whom have come to State through the Veterans Innovation Partnership Fellowship. https://lnkd.in/eyKbPEHS

  • Excellent reporting. We're at a critical juncture in the Sahel as Russia is unable to live up to its promises to multiple countries. Will local governments they double down with more brutality as they see that Russia cannot deliver security?

Visual investigation: How Wagner’s Ruthless Image Crumbled in Mali https://lnkd.in/eeqda6Nn 💥The battle of Tinzaouatene in northern Mali in July was one of the deadliest defeats ever suffered by the Wagner mercenary group outside of Ukraine. 🔬Our latest investigation at The New York Times shows that the defeat has further shattered Wagner’s reputation as a reliable force for African armies. 🇷🇺In Russia, relatives of the mercenaries accused Wagner of failing to tell them that their family members were dead. 🗺️ Our reconstruction of the fighting, one of the most extensive pieces of reporting ever published on a single Wagner battle, includes the battle’s precise locations and the way they caused a cascade of setbacks that led to Wagner’s rout. ➡️ We pieced together this moment-by-moment account from clues visible in satellite imagery and battlefield footage, and through interviews with participants and residents of the area. 🎹In collaboration with Christiaan Triebert, Riley Mellen, Sanjana Varghese & many others, shepherded by David Botti

  • Each of these unthinkable losses reminds me of all the others - other heroes and friends who gave their lives pursuing peace and caring for the most vulnerable among us. Every death is heartbreaking and the pattern of increasing attacks on humanitarians is devastating. We can do better than this. My love and respect to the whole Mercy Corps team.

Mercy Corps lost one of our staff members in an airstrike in northern Gaza on Friday. We are devastated. Mahasin was an artist, a mentor and a source of strength in her community. Her death was senseless. While it is hard to find hope now, her words to her fellow artists and freelancers are still true and show how profound her loss is. “Don't stop, no matter how dark it gets. Do what you can, for everything your hands touch will turn into hope, something miraculous born from the ashes. The first step is the hardest, but it is also the beginning of salvation. Amidst this devastation, we are the ones who create beauty, we are the ones who will redraw life." #ceasefirenow

A Grassroots Development Practitioner Team Leader / Executive Director at SAVE-Ghana with expertise in strategic planning. An advocate for Fulbe inclusion

I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this award today on behalf of my incredible team at SAVE Ghana. This recognition highlights our collective efforts to champion the rights of the #Fulbe people in Ghana. This award is not just for me; it's for every voice that has spoken up, every hand that has extended support, and every heart that believes in the power of #inclusion and #justice. Our journey has not been without challenges, but today reaffirms the truth that persistence in the face of adversity leads to progress. To the #Fulbe community and all vulnerable groups, this is proof that your struggles are being seen and heard globally. While our work is far from over, this recognition motivates us to keep pushing forward—advocating for equity, dignity, and lasting change. A special thank you to USAID - Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) 's, Creative Associates International, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, and everyone who has walked this path with us. To my incredible SAVE Ghana team, this is just the beginning. As the saying goes, "Good work, even in small corners, will be seen and rewarded." There is still much to do, but together, we are stronger, and together, we will build a future where every person is valued and empowered. Olivier G. In a heroic move, Gisele Pelicot fought to make public the videos of her unconscious rapes at the hands of over 50 men and won. She wanted the public “to look rape straight in the eyes.” Shame, she said, must change sides —from the victims to the perpetrators. Police found more than 20,000 videos and photographs of Gisele drugged and being raped by various men on her husband’s devices in a folder titled “Abuse.” On Friday, the judge complied with Gisele’s demand and showed the evidence “necessary for the manifestation of the truth.” 12 rape videos and 10 photos were shown over the courtroom’s three flat screens and projected into the overflow room for members of the public while the perpetrators in the videos sat in shame watching their own despicable criminal acts being exposed.

  • Since 2011, the Archive of Malian Photography, a collaborative team of US and Malian conservators has been cleaning, scanning, cataloging, and rehousing circa 101,000 photographic negatives from the archives of Mamadou Cissé, Félix Diallo, Adama Kouyaté, Abdourahmane Sakaly, Malick Sidibé, and Tijani Sitou for long-term preservation and access. Scrolling through is a pleasure and it's easy to imagine a thousand ways to use this priceless historical and cultural information. https://lnkd.in/eueRpbcC

  • While the tide may be turning against Russian proxies in the Sahel, the risk (and reality) of atrocities continues to grow. For all the recent talk of strategic communications and countering disinformation, the strongest weapon the West has against Russian and extremist narratives is a real commitment to human rights and support communities at risk.

#Mali: This major setback for Wagner and FAMA should be a message that recapturing and controlling northern Mali is not as simple as they might have thought. My fear is that we will see more atrocities against civilians, by Wagner and FAMA, especially that CSP-DPA do not have the capabilities to protect them. Expect new waves of displacement in coming weeks and months as well. Here is what I told AP: Rida Lyammouri, a senior fellow Policy Center for the New South, a think tank in Morocco, said the battle was a message to the government that “things are not going to be as easy and as simple when it comes to recapturing and controlling northern regions.” “Simultaneously, this setback might lead unfortunately to further atrocities against civilians” by the government and Wagner, Lyammouri said. https://lnkd.in/eDF-FkDw

  • I know it's easy for people who have never been to Darfur to think of it as a bleak and dusty place, full of death, like this photo. I remember it as a bright and fascinating place. My memory of El Fashir is of walking through town after dark and seeing boisterous families gathered, kids running up and down the road laughing. I didn't speak any useful languages, but somehow I was always sharing jokes with people. I remember the first time I saw herders bring goats through town - a riotous noise that made me laugh. Maybe it is obvious, but I think we need to read these reports and remember, this is someone's home. These people are people. This is not the natural state of things.

In what can only be described as the continued systematic targeting of innocent civilians, over 100 persons were massacred in the village of Wad Al-Noora, Gezira state, following a raid by the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF); the attack was followed by pillaging and the forcible displacement of villagers. These heinous acts are being replicated throughout Sudan. The city of Al-Fashir, North- Darfur, which shelters thousands of persons displaced from other parts of Darfur, is being subjected to an onslaught of indiscriminate shelling, which has destroyed civilian infrastructure and, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (#MSF), resulted in 1,280 casualties, including both deaths and injuries in the MSF supported south hospital. Homes, roads, markets, and hospitals are being shelled, leaving nowhere safe for refuge. Naming, condemning, and holding accountable all perpetrators of war crimes should be depoliticized; both the international community and domestic actors (political parties, political coalitions, CSOs, and community leaders) need to be explicit and determined in describing what is happening in Sudan. #sudan #warcrimes #gezirastate #darfur #alfashir #conflict #humanrights #displacement

  • I'll make this a little more pointed -- climate action in the richest countries of the world must be part of disaster risk reduction for everyone. We cannot keep talking about resilience of the most vulnerable without addressing our role in creating shocks.

🚨Climate change is one of the main drivers of disaster risk. 🌐It is time to scale up risk-informed climate action to reduce vulnerability and exposure to disasters and evade maladaptation. Risk-informed planning, programmes and financing must be integrated into disaster risk reduction, and comprehensive disaster and climate risk management must be promoted. 🌿Climate action can help reduce disaster deaths, and should be integrated into disaster risk reduction strategies.🌱 ➡️ https://ow.ly/VjMf50S4pHi #SDG13 #ClimateAction

    • Climate change drives disaster risk.
