DataHaven celebrated its 30th anniversary on Monday with its release of the 2024 Community Wellbeing Survey. Our President and CEO Karen DuBois-Walton helped break down the data with Dr. Mark Schaefer of the Connecticut Hospital Association and Yale School of Public Health’s Megan Ranney. The survey shows historically high rates of food and financial insecurity since the lapsing of pandemic relief. It also reveals areas of hope. Residents report high rates of satisfaction with living in Connecticut and in their neighborhoods. The Foundation looks forward to using this data in the coming year to bring our community together and focus our collective resources on improving wellbeing in all of our neighborhoods. Yesterday was Election Day and, no matter how one might feel about the results, it represents a shared community experience. It also represents a time of changing leadership. It represents changing priorities in some areas and continuation in others. It offers opportunities for people to collectively define themselves, change priorities, listen to each other, and to build coalitions, collectives and COMMUNITY. This is work that The Community Foundation is here for. As I settle in during this momentous week, I am energized by the role we can play in continuing to bring people together in Greater New Haven. I believe in the strength of our community. And I look forward to us collectively taking advantage of the opportunities that lie in front of us during this time of change and transition. In gratitude, Karen DuBois-Walton President and CEO of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven

A desire to help children was the guiding principle of Ilene Saulsbury’s professional life as a social worker in New Haven's Public Schools. For over 30 years, she compassionately helped students and their families deal with the trials and joys of life. After her retirement, Ilene sought to further her philanthropic work on behalf of children, by contributing to The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, where she established the Ilene M. Saulsbury Fund in 2005. The fund was originally established as a donor advised fund to support nonprofits dear to Ilene in her lifetime. Per her wishes, the fund will become a preference fund to support early childhood initiatives and organizations benefiting women and girls in perpetuity. Like the Ilene, you or someone you know can create a lasting legacy through a permanent endowment that benefits your community for generations. Thanks to Lillian and Henry Konopacke, nonprofits providing shelter to homeless cats and dogs in Greater New Haven are getting some extra support. The Lillian and Henry A. Konopacke Fund was created in 2013 by bequest of New Haven native Henry Konopacke, who worked as a machinist at the Winchester Repeating Arms Factory. Like the Konopackes, you or someone you know can create a lasting legacy through a permanent endowment that benefits your community for generations.
