Today marks a milestone in Alaska’s history—the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) on December 18, 1971. ANCSA granted the original residents of Chenega title to over 70,000 acres of land in Prince William Sound, paving the way for the creation of the Chenega Corporation, established three years later in 1974. ANCSA corporations have played a key role in celebrating cultural heritage, expanding educational opportunities and advancing economic development for Alaska Native people and the state as a whole. As we reflect on this important day, we honor the vision, perseverance, and dedication of Chenega’s early leaders and all those who fought for ANCSA. We also celebrate the progress we’ve made over the decades. We honor Renee Hagen for her remarkable 21 years of dedicated service as a key corporate leader at Chenega Corporation. Renee joined Chenega in 2003 as Assistant Controller, quickly advancing to Controller in 2004, Director of Business Services in 2007, and Chief Compliance Officer in 2009. She ultimately retired as Senior Vice President & Chief Compliance Officer, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy. Renee was instrumental in shaping the early years of our corporation, developing accounting and business systems that made Chenega a model of simplicity, scalability, and efficiency. Under her leadership, we became known among Alaska Native Corporations for having best-in-class business processes, with a track record of clean audits and compliance. Renee's leadership spanned key areas such as procedural standardization, business process improvements, and compliance across government contracts. She developed policies and procedures for compliance with complex regulations ensuring consistent, effective operations throughout the organization. Before joining Chenega, Renee spent 17 years at the Defense Contract Audit Agency, including three years as a Supervisory Auditor. As she enters retirement, we are grateful for the legacy of ethical business practices she leaves behind.
