This promises to be a powerful and enlightening film and discussion! The trauma of 2013's mass school closure is still raw in many Chicago neighborhoods. A handful have converted to residential buildings, but the vast majority sit vacant more than a decade later. Schools are anchors not easily replaced, but community leaders are determined to find creative reuses. We're looking forward to hearing more about redevelopment of the Emmet, Woods, and Overton schools on the South and West sides. All three projects have great momentum, guided by coalitions of community organizers. Borderless Studio MAS Context #ClosedSchools #AdaptiveReuse #Development #BeyondClosure
Join us on December 15 at 3 pm for the premiere of “Beyond Closure”, a documentary by On The Real Film and Borderless Studio that retraces the history of the largest mass school closures in the US history. This screening event will include a panel conversation with the film team and individuals featured in the film. About the Film What happened since Chicago closed 50 public schools in 2013? This documentary retraces the history of the largest mass school closures in the US history highlighting the intertwined issues of inequity, racism, and injustice. Three closed schools showcase a new pathway, one of community self-determination. Through the voices of community members leading the repurposing of Emmet, Woods, and Overton schools, this film reflects on community impact, their setbacks, and wins towards redevelopment.

Northwestern University shed new light on its $850 million Ryan Field rebuild on Monday. The football stadium is an outlier in several ways: - It dispenses with the traditional bowl design in favor of a more compact footprint that improves sightlines and amplifies home crowd noise advantage. - With just 35,000 seats, it's 30% smaller than the old Ryan Field. - It is the most expensive in NCAA history, and also 100% privately funded. - A 15-year, $157 million community benefits agreement pays into Evanston's Good Neighbor Fund, increases financial aid for high schoolers. and supports local civic, community, and faith-based groups. Construction began in June and is expected to complete in 2026. Yesterday, the Community Development Commission approved up to $98 million in TIF support for the planned mixed-use conversion of 135 S. LaSalle St. in the Loop. Led by Riverside Investment & Development, AmTrust RE and DL3 Realty, the $241 million adaptive reuse project would repurpose more than 430,000 square feet of office space in the building as 386 mixed-income residential units. Plans also include 92,000 square feet of commercial space for neighborhood-oriented amenities such as a grocery store, health center and medical office. 135 S. LaSalle St. is the fifth Loop office-to-residential project proposed to receive City financial support this year, part of an initiative intended to address rising vacancy rates, generate affordable housing and create a more modern, sustainable mix of uses in the area.
