The nearly 33% increase in homelessness over the past four years is a stark reminder of how pressing the issue has become. Robert Marbut Jr., former executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, called this rise “disgraceful,” and pointed out that the federal government needs to change its approach. “We need to focus on treatment of substance use and mental illness, and bring back program requirements, like job training,” Marbut said in an email. As this crisis continues to escalate, it’s more important than ever that we tackle the root causes of homelessness—substance use, mental health, employment barriers, and debilitating trauma.
