Please join us in welcoming the four newest members of the City of Fairfax Police Department: Officers Buettner, Cox, Pagani, and Hagerman! They graduated from session 151 of the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy this morning. They were sworn in last Friday during a ceremony at CFPD headquarters that was well attended by members of the department, our fellow city employees and leadership, and the officers' loved ones. Officers Buettner, Cox, Pagani, and Hagerman will spend the next 10 weeks in field training. If you see them in the community, please feel free to say hello and welcome them to our fine city. Earlier this week, one of Safeway's customer service managers, Ms. Rhones, observed an individual trying to use the Coinstar machine. She asked if she could assist, but she was rebuffed. Sensing something wasn’t quite right, she tried to intervene again. When she was again dismissed, she flagged down the CFPD’s MPO Cline who is often a visible presence at Courthouse Plaza Shopping Center. MPO Cline approached the individual at the Coinstar machine and asked if he could assist -- and if you work in law enforcement, you probably know what MPO Cline discovered. The individual using the Coinstar machine was on the brink of being the victim of a scam. A scammer had called the individual from a blocked number and pretended to be a deputy sheriff. The scammer insisted their would-be victim pay $4,500 in Bitcoin to address fees totaling $90,000 for failure to appear warrants. The scammer called back while MPO Cline was there, and MPO Cline was able to dissuade the scammer from continuing their attempt to scam the individual. We are so thankful to Ms. Rhones for her persistence and quick thinking when a customer’s situation didn't seem right to her. Great work, Ms. Rhones and MPO Cline! Sgt. Gardner, Lt. Kenyon, Lt. Lasowitz, and PFC Zurbach recently attended the National Tactical Officers Association's 24th Annual Crisis Negotiations Conference. The conference provided thought-provoking seminars led by some of the country's most knowledgeable crisis negotiation instructors, debriefs from recent crisis situations at other departments, and more. It was a wonderful opportunity for members of the CFPD to learn from their fellow officers' experiences and hone this important skill.
