Excited to see our colleague Lydia Oehlwein presenting at the #BauweltKongress2024 in Berlin. She's speaking about 'Urban density and natural diversity - New Frontiers in Urban Design: roofscapes, suffiency and biodiversity'. In November Lydia spoke on the same topic at the Bau Congress China+ in #Shenzhen, where she shared the stage with Yichun He, Dora Dong, Vincent de Graaf and Doreen Heng Liu for a conversation moderated by Boris Schade-Bünsow. In her presentation, Lydia focuses on how land loss can be avoided by focusing on urban life quality. She explains this through several of our projects including Residential Crown (https://lnkd.in/eibr5zhM) which saw twelve apartments added to the roof of an existing parking garage in #Hanover; the revitalization of the Guitanghe River in #Changsha (https://lnkd.in/eHgKPxnA) which transformed a channeled urban watercourse into an liveable public space; and our work on transforming the Harbour East at #Flensburg with a focus on sufficiency (https://lnkd.in/ebd4Dius).

On November 28th, our Founding Partner Nils Nolting will speak at Leuphana University of Lüneburg about why the status quo of building culture is not compatible with climate protection - and how a paradigm shift is possible. Find out about how a range of approaches including experimental planning and construction, simple construction methods, and building with existing buildings, can all point the way to a resource-saving future. 📅 Find the event details at: https://lnkd.in/eZpnrdKT

Will you be at the Dutch Green Building Council's Paris Proof Congress 2024? Keep an eye out for Valerie Heesakkers and say hello! We'll be on stage alongside our partners from Gemeente Rotterdam (Emiel Arends) and ERA Contour B.V. (Lisa Kappers) to present updates on what we've learned so far during our Carbon Based Urbanism research, and to explore some ways in which an expanded understanding of the urban scale can help achieve improved and more accurate emissions calculations. Our session will be Session 4 in Round 1, moderated by Laetitia Nossek, and it's titled 'Carbon Based Urbanism: Rekenen aan CO₂ met een breder perspectief dan het gebouw (Calculating CO₂ with a broader perspective than the building)'. We hope to see you there!

Reflecting on all the great conversations we had at this year's sold-out (!) Stadmakerscongress. Thanks again to AIR - Architectuur Instituut Rotterdam for organising everything, and to our aterliermeisters, Walter de Vries and Jip Pijs, for their great work planning such an engaging, diverse and idea-inspiring series of roundtables on the theme of "Naar een duurzame bouwcultuur". Thanks, too, to Lotte Hinkel for co-hosting the roundtable alongside our project lead Valerie Heesakkers, and to our partners at Rotterdam Circulair, Gemeente Rotterdam - Stadsontwikkeling and Kickstad for making the day such a success. We were especially grateful for Sofie van Brunschot's work organising briefings and comms for the participants in our atelier. It was a unique opportunity to meet so many like-minded people from across the industry and beyond, and to present and discuss our research into Carbon-Based Urbanism. What to do with a government building that has outlived its purpose? Today our Founding Partner Verena Brehm will give a talk in #Bonn about our work developing and repurposing the former headquarters of the city and state police, which was recently saved from demolition. The building, designed by Ernst van Dorp and Kurt Kleefisch and commissioned in 1975, is to be transformed into the heart of a new urban district. So how can we create a lively urban quarter between the motorway, the railway and the road? Verena Brehm will present the 'New Federal Quarter' project, while Kerim Abulzahab will explain what ideas the city of Bonn has for rapid implementation of the project. Both speakers will then have a public conversation, with moderation by Ralph Schweitzer. The lecture will take place today (November 19th) at the Institut für Geodäsie und Geoinformation | Uni Bonn at 6pm. You can find more details at https://lnkd.in/eQYmpWeZ. If you're in Bonn, we hope to catch you there! And if you're not but you'd still like to learn more, click below to head over to the project page on our website: https://lnkd.in/eRrHq2FG

How can a former industrial site become a piece of the urban fabric while preserving the traces of its history? Our design for the Henschel Quarter in #Kassel opens up historic sites to the public and secures them through flexible use. It is integrated into the city and accessible to everyone. The aim of our design is to preserve the historic #industrial culture while making it usable. Listed buildings are carefully restored and remain part of the public space, while the industrial past is preserved through minimally invasive interventions. The open space is transformed while historical traces such as tracks and crane runways are preserved, supplemented by green spaces and playgrounds. We are proud that our team together with urbanegestalt PartGmbB has won second place amongst a strong field of competitors, and we extend warm congratulations to Coido Architects, Hamburg for their win! Exciting to see the progress on city deals continuing to accelerate. Our research into Carbon-Based Urbanism underscores the need for these sorts of ambitious, forward thinking, future-proof and sustainable projects. We love to see it! 👏
Will you join us in Aachen for the prestigious annual Euregional Architecture Prize? Martin Sobota, one of our Founding Partners, is again a member of the jury, this year alongside Ragnhild Klußmann, Johann Eckartz, JO TAILLIEU and Tenuta Andrea. Analysis of the projects will be provided by Roel De Ridder. This prize, initiated by SCHUNCK, is awarded annually to the best graduation project of the five participating architecture faculties in the tri-national Euregio Meuse-Rhine: the RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences; Hasselt University and University of Liège, and the Academie van Bouwkunst Maastricht. A maximum of 30 projects from an average of 350 graduation projects are selected for participation in the award. An annually alternating international professional jury then assesses the projects in two intensive judging days before selecting the winners and honourable mentions. This year the award ceremony and exhibition takes place at FH Aachen on Saturday 15th November. For details and (free) tickets to the event, click through to https://lnkd.in/ezi7et6Y (Images from last year's winners- find their complete projects and Stichting ArchiNed's coverage of last year's edition here: https://lnkd.in/em4_qquw)
