What an incredible night it was! I felt truly privileged when Ruth Kendegye Ndyabahika invited me to share some thoughts at the Grace Villa fundraising dinner, aptly named the “Evening of Hope.” Ruth asked me to speak on the topic of African generosity. Since I’ve started to pay closer attention to this beautiful aspect of our culture, I’ve noticed it everywhere! That evening at the dinner, I aimed to express just how remarkable African giving is. I recalled a Star Cafe advertisement from a few years back where the person tried to capture what he described as “the sound of the taste of a good cup of coffee.” And it struck me—this was the connection I wanted to make for my audience: the sound of African generosity. But how do you even begin to articulate that sound? Here are a few images I shared: it’s the sound of a key turning in a lock, as we throw open our doors to welcome everyone. It’s the gentle thud of a flask being set down on a table, a vessel filled with tea destined to nourish many. It’s the scraping of beds being pushed together to create a larger sleeping space for both friends and strangers for the night. It’s the deep sigh of relief that resonates when a child’s school fees are covered—a sigh that signifies renewed dreams and lifted anxieties. I was honored to be among generous hearts at The Evening of Hope, embracing the laughter, the buzz of conversation, the joy in the air, the singing and dancing, and the diverse tones of voices as we heard pledge after pledge of financial and in-kind contributions. Consider any act of generosity and try to imagine all those beautiful sounds. Together, in unison, African generosity embodies the sound of hope.

On Saturday 23rd November, I thoroughly enjoyed attending the book activation event hosted by author and business coach, Henriette Paula Mugisa at ARISTOC BOOKLEX I liked the circular seating arrangement that encouraged everyone to engage in the discussion. I was thrilled that Paula brought us along on this journey with her. I also admire Aristoc for creating a space dedicated to showcasing Ugandan authors. Paula invited us to envision our dreams, and we delved into the concept of self-trust and how embracing it can lead us toward achieving our aspirations. I offered some thoughts on unconventional business practices, emphasizing the importance of celebrating our unique qualities and allowing ourselves to dream freely. I encouraged the audience to embrace originality in the small aspects of life, such as occasionally taking a different route home. Our conversation also touched on the precious gift and responsibility that time represents. As you embark on your own journey of unconventionality, I wish you all the best. Is it daunting? Without a doubt. Will there be failures? Yes, sometimes. But will you gain invaluable insights? Absolutely! Go for it!
