In NSW, fire safety reforms were introduced in 2022 to make buildings safer and increase compliance with fire safety measures. The key changes affecting building owners and/or developers from 13 February 2025: • From 13 February 2025 (or 18 months after an accreditation scheme is approved, whichever occurs first), owners must use an accredited person(s) to certify newly installed fire safety measures before issuing a fire safety certificate, and include relevant information about that accredited person in the fire safety certificate. • Owners must maintain essential fire safety measures in all types of buildings except single dwellings in accordance with procedures in the Australian Standard 1851-2012 Routine service of fire protection systems and equipment, where the maintenance activity is addressed by the standard. Australian Standard 1851-2012 sets out requirements for the routine servicing (inspection, testing, preventive maintenance and survey) of fire protection systems and equipment. This year, rather than sending out Christmas gifts to our clients and associates, CJK has decided to donate to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS). The RFDS is a non-profit organisation and relies on donations to provide emergency medical and primary healthcare work in remote and rural Australia. Christina, Johann and Emily attended the annual Cairns Engineers Australia Gala Dinner last week. Held in the Pullman International Hotel Grand Ballroom, it was a glamorous affair with live music and a three-course meal. It was a great opportunity catching up with industry peers, friends and clients. The keynote speaker was Dr Helen Cartledge who is Executive Director or Engineering and Logistics at Defence Australia. Her story was inspiring, entertaining and similar in some ways to our own Christina. Both were born in a remote area of Siberia and encouraged by their parent’s interest in science, rose above adversity and moved to Australia and studied engineering. Women In Construction FNQ - Christmas Cocktails 2024 was held on Friday 29 November at Wharf One. It was a lovely event with delicious food and music by Drewboy. There was a raffle to raise money for COUCH Wellness Centre and lucky Christina won a prize! CJK sponsored the Engineer the Future STEM Night for Girl Guide. The event was organised by Engineers Australia and held last month at James Cook University. The aim of the event was to encourage the next generation of girls to pursue engineering as a profession by completing fun and exciting engineering projects. The Girl Guides and Rangers, aged 10-17, had the most fun with the Christmas Tree Structures though some also loved the Electronic Kits and are asking for them for Christmas. The Brownies, aged 7-9, loved both their activities and had great success with Water Treatment Plant and the most fun with the Robot Mazes with all the mazes going home and a few robots attempted to be snuck in back pockets.
