🔬 Did you know? A recent study from the The University of Auckland, New Zealand, developed a numerical model using computational fluid dynamics to better understand surgical smoke behavior during laparoscopy. Researchers Hossein Hadi Najafabadi, Vinod Suresh, Callum James, Thomas Spence, Eu-Lee Teh, & John Edward Cater simulated smoke flow, heat transfer, and condensation to uncover insights that could improve surgical visibility and safety. 💨 Surgical smoke—more than just a nuisance. 😖 Key insights: ✅ Surgical smoke is 86% water vapor, 14% particulate matter (varies by tissue & device). ✅ Experimental data refined predictions on temperature, humidity, and smoke dispersion. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gy89XwQh #SurgicalInnovation #Laparoscopy #SurgicalSmoke #PatientSafety #ORStaffSafety #SurgicalVisibility #SurgicalResearch
About us
ClearCam is an Austin, TX based, MedTech startup, that develops technology to improve the surgeons' visual field during minimally invasive procedures nationwide. Our device, ClearScope™, provides continuous vision and clarity throughout laparoscopic procedures without removing the scope from the body cavity. The wiper, swift tip™, cleans the distal lens of the scope with a simple twist. ClearScope™ slides onto the scope as a sleeve and secures with a tether that wraps around the light port. The wiper is connected to a mechanical ships wheel that is rotated using minimal force. ClearScope is effective against condensation, blood, fat and fluids. No extra accessories required. 🔍 Improving Laparoscopic Visibility: The Challenge of Scope Cleaning 🔍 Clear visibility is critical in laparoscopic surgery, yet fogging and debris often lead to frequent scope removals, increasing operative time and impacting efficiency. At ClearCam, we’re often asked, “Why hasn’t the dirty lens issue been solved?” The truth is, many have tried, but success has been limited. A recent study done at the UC San Diego, compared a novel cold plasma cleaning device to an existing heated anti-fogging solution: The novel device showed fewer scope removals and reduced debris events, though differences weren’t statistically significant. Both devices had similar cleaning times, highlighting comparable efficiency. This is why we need an in-vivo solution—one that addresses lens contamination without interrupting the flow of surgery. That's what our team is working hard to achieve. 🌟 Thoracic Surgeons, We've Got Your Back!🩺🔬 According to a publication in the Journal of Thoracic Disease "The frustration is that regardless of how good a surgeon’s manual dexterity is, if the assistant is unable to deliver a decent view with the video-thoracoscope, then visual element of the surgery will impede the performance of the operation... the lack of a trocar means the lens can be easily smeared." - Alan D. L. Sihoe, The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary Hospital ClearScope keeps your surgical view pristine with a simple in vivo lens cleaning wiper. Clear vision in laparoscopic surgery isn’t optional—it’s essential. Yet, even with innovations like HD imaging and fluorescence, surgeons still face challenges like fogging, debris, and smoke that obstruct their view. Recent studies back this up: 🔍 Methylene blue fluorescence improves ureter visualization and reduces injuries (2024) 🔥 Patient burns from laparoscopic light sources remain a hidden risk (2023) 🌫 Filter trocars show promise for reducing surgical smoke (2024) At ClearCam, we saw a big problem and designed a simple, powerful solution to keep surgical lenses clear—no interruptions, no compromises. ClearCam Friends, We hosted students from the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, in the Biomedical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin and the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. The students had the opportunity to explore real-world product design and manufacturing through hands-on activities such as device assembly and disassembly. They gained insights into manufacturing techniques, including our injection-molded parts from Protolabs and our custom-designed wire and wiper assemblies. We examined real-life examples of how the subject matter is applied outside the classroom, such as in MedTech quality and regulatory practices. Additionally, we engaged in discussions and strategies aimed at enhancing their professional development, helping them prepare for opportunities in the industry. (David Oh, our R&D Engineer, told his awesome story of how he engaged with ClearCam!). Thank you to Kassi Perez and the Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC) Externship program for organizing this, and to the students for their curiosity and enthusiasm. We encourage other Austin companies to participate in programs like this to support future talent.
