📣 The average carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentration in the atmosphere was 4️⃣2️⃣4️⃣.7️⃣ ppm (parts per million) in 2024, up by 3️⃣.5️⃣ ppm from 2023. ⬆️ For the last 100 years the concentration (ppm) of CO₂ has been increasing every year. In the last ten years the average annual increase has been 2️⃣.6️⃣ ppm. Comment below with what you think the average CO₂ ppm atmospheric concentration will be for 2025 and read on to learn more about annual CO₂ trends. 🍂 Similar to recent years prior, in 2024, the atmospheric concentrations of CO₂ naturally increased between the months of January through June and then decreased between July through September due to the plants in the northern hemisphere growing and absorbing CO₂ from the atmosphere. Once those plants started to decay in October, they released the CO₂ they absorbed back into the atmosphere so the concentration started to rise again. 📈 While there are annual increases and decreases naturally, it is important to address and take action on the rapid increase of CO₂ being emitted into the atmosphere by industrial activity and consumption processes. Currently more CO₂ is being emitted into the atmosphere than the natural processes can regulate so the atmospheric concentration of CO₂ continues to increase each year. ❓ But like, what is ppm and why is it important?! Goooood question! Let’s dig in! 📚 Concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere has been under 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ ppm for the last 800,000 years, until the 1900s that is! 📚 With the industrial revolution and burning of oils and fossil fuels for energy, CO₂ ppm and concentration in the atmosphere has increased steadily. With more CO₂ particles and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, heat is trapped and our planet warms! 📚 Experts say if we surpass 4️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ ppm, the average global temperature will rise more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial averages, which is not ideal for the planet and all inhabitants. 📚 We need to reach 3️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ ppm or below (waaaaay below actually…) in order for our planet to thrive. 🏆 Reducing emissions is key, removing carbon from the atmosphere is imperative! Knowing CO₂ concentration should be as important as knowing the weather. Don’t ya think?! Check back for our monthly reports and check daily CO₂ levels here: https://lnkd.in/eKRt5bh 🙏 Give this post a like and share to help get the word out! #carbonfootprint #ppm #co2concentration #themoreyouknow #climatedata #climate #climateaction #learnsomethingnew #data

Welcome to our 💚Path⭐to⭐Net⭐Zero💚 series, countries edition! 🇷🇺 Russia's net-zero target is 2060 and has an interesting GHG emission history. The biggest global decrease in emissions this century coincided with COVID lockdown and the second biggest decrease was caused by the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which created a major economic downturn. 🌳 Biodiversity: Being the world's largest country by area means Russia encompasses a lot of different ecosystems and has high biodiversity. ⚖️ Climate Justice: The RAIPON and Arctic Council are working with Russia's indigenous peoples to move forward with climate initiatives inclusively. 🌎 NDCs: Check out Russia's emissions reduction goals for 2030. It's interesting that 1990 was chosen as the base year, which was prior to the big drop in emissions caused by the dissolution of the Soviet Union. 🤔 But wait, what is net-zero? “Net zero refers to a state in which the greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere are balanced by removal out of the atmosphere.“ - Oxford Net Zero 🔗 To learn more, head over to the University of Oxford's site: https://lnkd.in/gZ6TnV2q 🌎 Want to see how Russia's plan compares to other countries? 💙 A little valentines love for our ocean! 🌊 Our ocean is stratified. The top layer is surface water, and the bottom layer is deep water. Each layer has different properties (ex. oxygen levels, nutrient levels) and mixing of the layers are key for a healthy ocean and planet. 🎯 Book my ocean workshop to engage employees on this important and critical topic. The workshop is informative, empowering, and entertaining! More info here: https://lnkd.in/g7kJsP6U 💡 Our ocean makes up 70% of the planet, produces 50% of the oxygen we breathe, and plays a vital role in weather patterns and our climate. 🥁 Drumroll ✨ 👊 Which has a higher carbon footprint?! An aluminum can or (glass) bottle? Keep reading for the answer! 🤓 Walking through a few key steps of the lifecycle of each item will help us arrive at the answer: 💡 Manufacturing: high temperatures required to melt silica into glass hover around 1700 Celsius or 3090 Fahrenheit meaning that energy required to manufacture glass is extremely intense. Some studies suggest that manufacturing aluminum cans result in 20% plus emissions reductions. 💡Transport: Aluminum is much lighter compared to glass and as a result, less energy (fuel) is required to transport aluminum cans, making this step in the lifecycle much lower when it comes to carbon emissions compared to glass bottles. Additionally, aluminum cans require less sturdy cardboard packaging because of its lighter weight. 💡End of life: projecting a more circular lifecycle for cans and bottles, aluminum can be nealry infinitely recycled whereas glass quality does degraded each time its recycled. We also need to take into account the energy (fuel) used to transport these items back to the recycling facility. When it comes to recycling, aluminum’s carbon footprint is lower. 💡Raw materials: typically this is the first stage of a lifecycle analysis (LCA) but we have it last here because we want readers to contemplate the bigger picture. There is a global shortage in silica, the precursor raw materials for glass. Silica’s widespread use from glass used for construction, automobile manufacturing, and also manufacturing of semiconductors makes it a material in high demand. China, one of the largest silica producers in the world has also cut manufacturing to meet climate targets. You can learn more in this article: https://lnkd.in/gps_Ghcf 🎯 So, the verdict? From a pure carbon footprint standpoint, aluminum is lower in carbon footprint compared to glass. When it comes to vessels and containers, finding ways to eliminate single-use items and the need to recycle (and re-transport and re-manufacture) is an area worth exploring. What other factors would you add? We'd love to hear in the comments!
