Underperforming & Unprepared: How have platforms responded to EU legislation for online safety so far? Our report has identified substantial gaps in Big Tech’s efforts to address climate disinformation on its platforms. Employing an 18-point assessment system and informed by the three latest Strengthened Code of Practice Reports and the initial round of Digital Service Act (DSA) Transparency Reports released earlier this year, we critically assessed current policies to understand how platforms have responded to EU legislation so far. Key findings from the report show: ❌ Most platforms do not categorise climate misinformation adequately in their advertising or content moderation policies. ❌ There is a significant lack of transparency and visible action on users and brands repeatedly spreading climate misinformation. ❌ No platforms have specific policies to restrict advertising from the fossil fuel sector or to prevent greenwashing. 🔗 Read the full report here: https://buff.ly/3vMppX5 #climateaction #CAAD #disinformation #misinformation #EU #BigTech #transparency

🚨 BREAKING: 220 fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists have registered for plastics treaty talks — outnumbering every single delegation at INC-5, according to an analysis by the Center for International Environmental Law. There are more fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists registered for the fifth and final scheduled negotiation than any of the previous negotiations. In the interest of protecting their profits, polluters are attempting to delay and derail what people and our climate demand — a plastics treaty that cuts plastic production. It's time to kick polluters out. 🔗 Link in comments for the full story. #PlasticssTreaty #INC5 #KickPollutersOut This analysis was supported by International Indigenous Peoples' Forum on Plastics (IIPFP), IPEN (International Pollutants Elimination Network), Break Free From Plastic, GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives), Greenpeace, Stop Tobacco Pollution Alliance, Scientists' Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, and the Korean Uproot Plastic Coalition — and based on the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI)'s provisional list of INC-5 participants, finds that:

How to debunk misinformation? An experimental online study investigating text structures and headline formats Helge Giese Laura M. Konig British Journal of Health Psychology 2023 “Results While the debunking messages specifically decreased the belief in the targeted myth, these beliefs and the acceptance of the debunking message were unaffected by the text structures and headline formats. Yet, they were less successful when addressing individuals with strong pre-existing, incongruent attitudes and distrust in science. Conclusions The risk of backfire effects in debunking misinformation is low. Text structure and headline format are of relatively little importance for the effectiveness of debunking messages. Instead, writers may need to pay attention to the text being comprehensive, trustworthy and persuasive to maximize effectiveness.” https://lnkd.in/ex5ybTYJ

#COP29 concluded in Baku this weekend with a deal. What happened and what needs to happen next? 👉 The main objective of COP29 was to deliver a new finance goal to support developing countries to reduce their emissions and adapt to the climate crisis, and to pave the way to countries’ new climate pledges expected next year. 👉 It did (eventually) close with a deal on the New Collective Quantified Goal, but this figure remains insufficient to meet the needs of those countries most vulnerable to climate change. 👉 Last year, we celebrated the historic pledge from countries at COP28 to ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels. But this time, the plan to turn this ambition into action was pushed back to next year’s summit in Brazil. 👉 Despite the frustrations shared at the end of the COP on these two critical priorities, COP29 saw some progress. After nearly a decade of negotiations, COP29 reached agreement on carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Mexico, Latin America’s second-largest emitter, announced it will set a target to reach net zero by 2050. 25 countries and the EU announced plans to include a pledge for ‘no new unabated coal power’ in their next climate plans (NDCs). More than 30 countries representing nearly 50% of global methane emissions signed up to a new declaration to set targets in future NDCs on reducing methane from organic waste. More than 1,700 oil, gas and coal lobbyists are registered attendees of this year’s international climate summit, currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, to try to persuade the world that the fossil fuel industry can be part of the climate solution. The PR companies that help them sell that message are not far behind. TJ Jordan dives into this issue at COP29 in his latest article 🔗 https://loom.ly/JX6rzH4

🚨 The Guardian reports that nearly 500 carbon capture and storage (CCS) lobbyists have been granted access to the UN climate summit #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. This number exceeds core delegations from major nations and raises concerns about industry influence. “We are witnessing fossil-fuel greenwashing by those attempting to delay the inevitable fossil fuels phase-out,” said Rachel Kennerley, International Carbon Capture CCampaigner at Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL). “This large presence of lobbyists is a confirmation that the carbon capture industry is working hard to promote the misguided CCS technology. But governments and companies simply cannot ‘clean’ their coal, oil, and gas by capturing and ‘managing’ emissions.” 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e_4V-Z8b
