Demand for international credits is a critical gap in the global climate effort. This report explores why and how it might be addressed. From an NZ perspective, but the same issues are likely to be relevant elsewhere. The Rockefeller Foundation recognised this as a key issue in a panel at New York Climate week.

🌍 #ChileCarbonForum2024: Francisco Pinto, Focal Point of #ClimateActionTeams led a brilliant conversation on “New public-private collaboration schemes for the promotion of market mechanisms and carbon pricing”, where the key role of public-private collaboration for a successful and ambitious implementation of climate policies was analyzed. Throughout the conversation, it was highlighted how strategic partnerships between Government and different market actors can mobilize resources, foster #Innovation and ensure a more effective implementation of #CarbonPolicies, promoting investment in sustainable solutions. In #Chile, significant progress has already been seen in this collaboration, but to scale its impact it is fundamental to integrate the capacities and needs of all the actors involved. During the first day of the #ChileCarbonForum, Rodrigo Bórquez N., project manager of #ClimateActionTeams moderated the interesting panel “Advances in international negotiations and Article 6: opportunities and Chile's progress in its implementation”, guiding an in-depth conversation on the #Article6 of the #ParisAgreement and its impact on Chile. With the participation of Cristina Figueroa Vargas (Ministerio del Medio Ambiente), Joachim Sell (Fundación KliK), Francisco Pinto (#CAT) and Jorge Cruz Villalobos (Ongresso Energy), the panel addressed how this article allows countries to exchange #CarbonCredits and finance key projects to mitigate #ClimateChange. Chile, always leading in the region, has made progress in implementing these market mechanisms with the goal of achieving #CarbonNeutrality by 2050. A key theme during the conversation was how collaboration between different sectors and actors such are fundamental to make the most of these opportunities, creating bridges of trust that allow us to move towards common goals. I've been thinking for a long time about how to best to support cooperative action where some people/countries have more resources while others have more opportunities for mitigation. In the real world many people, including Environmental Defense Fund, Ruben Lubowski, Dylan McCall-Landry, Nathaniel Keohane, Vikram Widge, Lawrence Ang and Ely Sandler are working to create mechanisms to more effectively and equitably support increased climate ambition by those with limited resources. It's hard. Not just because the real world is complex - which it is - but also because the agreements between people/countries are embedded in a challenging, dynamic public good provision problem. Both sides have persistent incentives to free ride. And climate change is the most challenging public good provision problem humanity has faced. Theoretical economics, and particular repeated game theory, can help us with insights. Bård Harstad has done some really great thinking in this space exploring how directly supporting investments as well as providing payments for emission reductions can achieve more global cooperation than we can achieve with one instrument alone. We've extended his work a little by exploring whether the timing of these payments matters. It does. We shouldn't wait until we can see the full impact of investments by observing emissions - we should make some payments as soon as the investment is complete. And interestingly, only paying when emission reductions have been observed is most advantageous for those making the payments - they can extract more surplus even though they have to compensate the sellers for the delay in payment. Warning, there is a lot of maths in this paper! My co-authors, Steffen Lippert and Edmund Lou take all the credit for that. My days as a game theorist are long past! https://lnkd.in/gs-6dR6z
