🌍 Nitrous Oxide: No Laughing Matter for the Climate Challenge The new Global Nitrous Oxide Assessment by UN Environment Programme launched at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, reveals the critical role of nitrous oxide (N₂O), also known as laughing gas, in climate change and ozone depletion. Often overshadowed by carbon dioxide and methane, N₂O ranks as the third most significant greenhouse gas, with 273 times the warming potential of CO₂ over 100 years and a lifespan exceeding a century. It is also the largest contributor to ozone depletion today. Effective reduction strategies could avoid a cumulative 235 billion tonnes CO₂e by 2100, equivalent to 6+ years of today’s global fossil fuel emissions.
