Climate Action Nurses
Hospitals and Health Care
We are a passionate group of Australian Nurses dedicated to making a positive impact on our planet.
About us
Climate Action Nurses (CAN) operates on a powerful theory of change, envisioning a sustainable future through three key impacts. Firstly, we champion the concept of Climate Ready Healthcare, emphasizing the urgent need for healthcare systems to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. CAN promotes the implementation of resilient infrastructure, preparedness plans, and training programs to ensure healthcare facilities can effectively respond to climate-related emergencies and safeguard patient well-being. Secondly, CAN strives to foster Climate Friendly Communities by actively engaging with local stakeholders. We advocate for sustainable urban planning, green spaces, and access to clean air and water, aiming to lower emissions both inside and outside of the healthcare sector. Finally, CAN is committed to empowering, educating and activating Climate Smart Nurses, so that we can harness the power of the largest healthcare workforce to step up, step forward and lead.

Some incredible thoughts and suggestions for the incredible Sarah Ripley (nee Almeroth)

A recent report on plastic use in Australia highlights a critical issue: recycling alone won't solve our plastic waste crisis. Despite being touted as a 'circular' solution, recycling remains inefficient, costly, and hazardous. Meanwhile, the oil industry is investing $400 billion in new petrochemical plants, anticipating increased demand for plastics. Alarmingly, Australia's plastic consumption has surged by 116% between 2000 and 2021, with only 15% of plastic waste recovered over the last 20 years. Globally, 32% of plastic packaging escapes collection systems, polluting our environment. Microplastics now contaminate the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat, appearing in 94% of oysters and 62% of fish in Australia. The health risks are serious, with plastics linked to diseases such as cancer, lung disease, and endocrine toxicity. An estimated 400,000 to 1 million people die annually from diseases related to mismanaged waste, especially in the global South. To effectively address this crisis, Australia must prioritize reducing plastic production and consumption. The days of dealing with plastic waste by shipping it overseas, burning, or burying it are behind us. We all have a role to play in tackling this global problem. Source: The Australia Institute, "Plastic Waste in Australia," January 2024. Individuals and households can make a difference by reducing, reusing, repurposing, and, where necessary, recycling. Reduction should be the first point of action, avoiding unnecessary plastic purchases. Understanding the gravity of our global plastic problem has inspired us to take meaningful action, starting with simple swaps in our own home. Here are a few changes we've made to reduce our plastic use 💚 1️⃣Paper Towels: We’ve switched to reusable paper towels made from post-consumer recycled materials. They’re machine washable and a sustainable alternative to single-use paper towels. 2️⃣Bottled shampoo and conditioner: While the bottle can be recycled, the plunger typically isn’t. Globally, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute—yikes! Switching to bar shampoo and conditioner was an easy change for us. There are plenty of options on the market, and we just go with whatever’s on special. 😊 3️⃣Deodorant: Instead of roll-on deodorant, I now use a refillable deodorant stick. I love the scent, and it’s effective—no odour or sweat issues here🙌🏼 4️⃣Dental Floss: We’ve switched to eco-friendly dental floss made from biodegradable materials like silk and plant-based Fibers. #sustainability #plasticwaste #circulareconomy #environmentalimpact #climateaction #zerowaste #plasticpollution #wastereduction #sustainableliving #healthandenvironment #ecofriendly #responsibleconsumption

I'm excited to share my article published in Environmental Education Research, in which I sketch out questions and pedagogies that may help us move towards a transformative Climate Change Education (CCE): https://lnkd.in/euCEF8iX (doi: 10.1080/13504622.2024.2365983) CCE is recognized as a pivotal mechanism for raising awareness and inspiring action in the face of climate change. However, the way CCE has been actualized in school settings has often fallen short of inspiring and preparing students to take meaningful, transformative climate action. The diagram below, from the article, summarizes some of the questions educators must ask regarding CCE, and some of the pedagogical approaches that may help us work through those questions. Thanks to my committee members Blane Harvey, Ellen Field, and Joseph Levitan, for their support in this research, as well as Alan Reid and the other editors and anonymous reviewers of Environmental Education Research and Taylor & Francis Group. Please let me know if you’re not able to access the article, as I have a few free copies to share. #climatechangeeducation #SDG13 #sustainabilityeducation #transformativelearning
