High-Level Climate Champions

Environmental Services

H.E. Ms. Razan Al Mubarak and Ms. Nigar Arpadarai are the High-Level Climate Champions for #COP28 and #COP29.

About us

At the COP 21 United Nations climate change conference in Paris, governments agreed that mobilizing stronger and more ambitious climate action is urgently required to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. To connect the work of governments with the many voluntary and collaborative actions taken by cities, regions, businesses and investors, nations decided to appoint two Climate Change High-Level Champions. The champions work focuses on two crucial areas: 1. Engage with interested Parties and non-Party stakeholders: This work builds on existing initiatives and supports new and more geographically diverse initiatives. Focus is placed on connecting initiatives and coalitions with national action plans such as nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement. This helps bringing more transparency, with result tracking and lends demonstrable credibility to climate action. 2. Input from the champions efforts to mobilize action helps the secretariat organize technical expert meetings and, in collaboration with the Executive Secretary and the current and incoming Presidents of the Conference of the Parties, coordinate annual high-level events to spur even greater ambition and action.

  • Delegates from countries, and representatives of civil society organisations, the private sector, and academia resumed crucial biodiversity discussions at #CBDCOP16, in Rome. Mobilising finance for biodiversity, taking stock of progress in implementing the #KMGBF and promoting joint actions across the three #RioConventions are key topics of discussion. Here are some signals of change across the three #RioConventions: 💲 Nature Positive for Climate Action campaign mobilised over 600 business and financial institutions, including USD 17.7 trillion in assets that have committed to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financing Disclosures-aligned risk management and reporting. 🌱  USD 12 billion in land restoration, land degradation and drought #resilience were pledged as part of the Riyadh Action Agenda at #COP16Riyadh. 🌳 The Tropical Forests Financing Facility aims to provide payment for ecosystem services of standing forests across the tropics.   📈 Private finance for nature has surged elevenfold in four years, from USD 9.4 billion to over USD 102 billion. • Coastal communities are on the frontlines of climate risks. Ports and shipping must evolve to meet the demands of a changing world. But how can engineering align with nature rather than work against it? An invite-only roundtable will bring together experts to explore solutions that go beyond mitigation—focusing on resilience, biodiversity conservation, and pollution reduction. With a mix of case studies, best practices, and interactive discussions, insights from this session will shape global recommendations for nature-positive engineering. The future of coastal protection and sustainable maritime development depends on bold ideas and collective action. This is a step toward making it happen.
