CLP Strategies’ Brian Cattell participated in a panel discussion on crisis communications organized by the Canadian Investor Relations Institute (CIRI) BC Chapter. The panel also included Mélanie Hennessey MBA ICD.D, Vice President Corporate Communication at Novagold and David Salmon, President of Laurel Hill, and was moderated by David Frost, Partner at McCarthy Tetrault. Topics covered included how best to prepare an organization for a potential crisis; how to use social media most effectively during a crisis; and how to balance the need for responsive communications with the imperative of avoiding misinformation. Two surveys released Friday suggest that financial markets have got carried away with the idea of an imminent Trump-triggered pick-up in US economic activity. The future output index of the S&P Global composite PMI survey—an indicator of corporate confidence—rose only modestly to 69.4 in November, from 67.8 in October. November's reading was the highest since May 2022, but only by a slender margin, and it was no higher than the flash estimate for October, which has since been revised down. Meanwhile, the November University of Michigan consumer sentiment index was revised down to 71.8, from the 73.9 flash estimate, and now is back in line with its average level in the previous 12 months. The flash estimate was based on responses received between October 22 and November 4, whereas the final reading included responses up to November 18. The downward revision indicates that, on balance, consumers' confidence has deteriorated since the election, with sentiment among Democrat voters falling by more than it has improved among Republicans. Both surveys also might overstate the true level of business and consumer confidence. S&P's survey excludes retailers, who probably are nervous now about the potential squeeze on their margins from tariffs. In addition, the UoM survey probably is failing to register the probable collapse in confidence among the 12 million people that Mr. Trump supposedly wants to deport. All told, then, we are sticking with our forecast that the US economy will lose some momentum over the coming months. We look for a slowdown in GDP growth to 2-to-2.5% in Q4, from 2.8% in Q3, followed by a similar leg down in Q1.

CLP Strategies “Insights,” Sept. 20,2024: BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has been working hard to pivot his firm’s reputation away from ESG in the wake of criticism from red state treasurers and lobbyists.
