Through hundreds of conversations with companies in field services and other job-based industries, a clear and resounding need emerged for a card-agnostic expense management platform offering control on par with what platforms like Ramp and Brex provide. It's exciting to share that Clyr is on the brink of matching those capabilities and more (stay tuned!). We're especially heartened by the enthusiasm and support from our rapidly expanding community of users, who have been instrumental in shaping our journey. In our series NOT FINTECH INVESTMENT ADVICE Simon Taylor and I chat about different fintech companies that caught our eye. Time to revisit our 2023 vault and see what’s changed for expense management company Clyr. Clyr is similar to a Ramp or Airbase – but specifically targeted to the needs of small to medium sized businesses within the field service sector (think: plumbers, roofers, and solar panel installers). This is what sets them apart in the expense management industry. They don’t offer a card, but a SaaS subscription fee. This way execs can keep accruing all the rewards from the cards used by their employees, which they’re loath to part with, and upgrade their expense management software that can integrate with all their systems. In short, Clyr is a card-agnostic expense management platform for an untapped segment in the market. Here’s what we said then: Customer acquisition is a big pain point. There’s a reason Intuit and QuickBooks tend to hoover up a lot of these SMEs: it’s because Intuit and QuickBooks are well-known incumbents with big marketing budgets. How can smaller competitors like Clyr compete? I think the best growth engine for these smaller businesses is word of mouth and referrals, which means you’d want your product to be viral within all of these niche service business communities. And I think if you build a product that’s a real improvement on whatever else out there (especially in a segment with limited competition), that’s a winning formula. A viral product dramatically accelerates your ability to reach customers. Otherwise, you're always gonna be spending money to get customers. And that's just a tough place to live when you don't have a lot of margin to begin with. I hope Clyr’s product can get traction because small business is such a tough market to win in. Fast-forward to today, there is some evidence that Clyr may have been ahead of the curve. Navan, a big player in the corporate card and travel expense management space, recently introduced the ability for clients to bring their own cards to the platform rather than requiring them to use the Navan card. From the get-go, Clyr was focused on wrapping value around existing cards versus insisting companies switch to a proprietary one. I wonder whether we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of the “bring your own card” model in the expense management ecosystem.
