🚢 In the news: North American port workers are battling plans to cut jobs and deskill the workforce, which employers say will reduce costs and drive productivity and efficiencies through automation. Canadian dockers’ unions in Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Montreal are opposed to scheduling plans and automation, with staff representatives claiming that automation is not the panacea employers would have governments believe, while employers counter-claim that unions are trying to hold back progress. In the US negotiations over similar issues are due to restart in January between east coast dockers and the employer’s association the US Maritime Alliance (USMX). 📰 Read the full story on Seatrade Maritime News: https://lnkd.in/dEtMtUm6 #CMAShipping #Port #Maritime #Automation

🚢 In the news: European and Latin American imports into the US would be left stranded if the threat of East Coast port dockworker strike from 1 October becomes a reality, warns HSBC Global Research. If a strike goes ahead the picture would be bleaker for European and Latin American imports into the US than their Asian counterparts. “In case of a shutdown of EC and GC (Gulf Coast) ports, there would at least be some recourse to WC ports for Asian cargoes, but this would still place significant strains on the port side and landside cargo evacuation infrastructure,” the report said. 📰 Read the full story on Seatrade Maritime News: https://lnkd.in/e4hueBKQ #CMAShipping #Trade #Port

🚢 In the news: “Everybody doing business with the US should feel concerned,” said Xeneta Chief Analyst Peter Sand following Tuesday’s election debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The recent U.S. presidential debate left container shippers on edge, as the industry continues to face mounting pressures from economic uncertainty and global supply chain issues. Despite discussions on trade policies, key concerns such as inflation, regulatory changes, and port congestion were not fully addressed, leaving shippers with little reassurance about the future. With many awaiting clearer policy directions, the industry remains cautious about what lies ahead. 📰 Read the full story on Seatrade Maritime News: https://lnkd.in/ex6uhT_E #CMAShipping #Trade #Container
