US opens probe into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles over remote driving feature The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles equipped with the Actually Smart Summon feature, following reports of four crashes where vehicles failed to detect obstacles while being controlled remotely through a smartphone app. The probe covers multiple Tesla models from 2016-2025 and focuses on evaluating the feature's maximum speed, public road usage, line of sight requirements, and system performance in unexpected conditions. This investigation adds to Tesla's existing regulatory scrutiny, coming shortly after an October probe into their Full Self-Driving software and a December 2023 recall of over two million vehicles for Autopilot safety concerns. The reported incidents include cases where users had insufficient time to prevent collisions with parked vehicles and posts, raising questions about the feature's safety and reliability as Tesla continues to push towards autonomous driving technology.
