The Coalition for Clean Air works to protect public health, improve air quality, and prevent climate change.
About us
Follow the Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) to join our community of professionals, policy-makers and everyday people dedicated to bringing clean air to California. Established in 1971, CCA is California's only statewide public interest organization advocating exclusively for improving air quality and preventing climate change. From creating the idea for California’s original Smog Check program in 1981 to ensuring the first national ban on the toxic dry cleaning chemical “perc” to helping pass legislation to put 1 million electric vehicles on California’s roads by 2023, CCA leads the way to socially and environmentally responsible air policies nationally and worldwide. Today our small but might staff engages in educational programming, informing policy and coordinating the largest air quality campaign in the State: California Clean Air Day. Why We Exist In California, nine out of ten people breathe air that violates federal clean air standards. This creates far higher rates of asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular disease. Children and the elderly are particularly at risk. Early exposure to air pollution leads to a lifetime of weakened lungs. Thousands of people die of lung cancer every year who have never smoked a day in their life. Climate change is expected to exacerbate the situation, increasing the intensity and number of days we are exposed to this toxic soup of air pollution. The good news is that there is a path forward. Through good policies, the adoption of new technologies and the involvement of people like you, we can restore clean, healthy air to California.

CCA Policy Director, Bill Magavern, has authored a powerful piece in Capitol Weekly, dissecting the recent election’s mixed results for California’s climate future. While the approval of a $10 billion climate bond is a huge win, the return of Trump to the White House poses significant threats to our progress. Bill eloquently outlines the urgent need for California to defend its environmental leadership and protect our communities from pollution and climate change. Dive into the insightful analysis and learn how we can continue to fight for clean air and a sustainable future. Tell The Biden Administration’s US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Grant Clean Air Waivers NOW The US EPA has delayed for far too long its decisions on eight California Clean Air Waivers that are waiting to be approved. These standards will reduce harmful air pollution from trucks, cars, locomotives, boats, leaf-blowers, and lawnmowers. That’s a lot of pollution waiting to be cleaned up from our communities! This pollution causes asthma, respiratory illness, and cancer. Urge EPA Administrator Michael Regan to approve these eight outstanding Clean Air Waivers today, before it’s too late. Let him know that Californians want Clean Air! Learn More: https://lnkd.in/gnRCDjHy

We just concluded our 4th All About Air Quality Bootcamp in Ontario, and it was a huge success! Over three days, we had incredible discussions on health impacts, the history of Riverside County, air monitor findings in Ontario, and the challenges of warehousing in the Inland Empire. A huge thank you to our presenters, California Air Resources Board for funding the Bootcamp, and Ontario International Airport for sponsoring meals! We’re especially grateful to the participants who brought so much energy and insight to the sessions. Together, we’re building a future with cleaner, healthier air! #AirQualityBootcamp #CleanAirForAll #OntarioCA

“A Trump agenda means more sickness and death caused by pollution and runaway climate change. It was challenging already with a relatively cooperative federal government.” -Bill Magavern, CCA Policy Director notes that many of the more innovative air policies and standards that state regulators have passed in recent years have not yet received federal approval. A victory for our communities and the climate is at risk. In 2022, California Air Resources Board took a bold step by amending the Commercial Harbor Craft Rule to mandate zero-emissions ferries and cleaner engines for tugboats and other vessels. But these lifesaving amendments are still waiting for approval from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We need your help! Harbor craft vessels are a major source of cancer-causing emissions, harming the health of working-class Black and Brown communities near the San Pedro Bay ports. With your support, we can urge the EPA to approve these protections that will save lives and improve air quality. Sign the petition by November 29th to demand the EPA approve California’s request for cleaner air and healthier communities. Your voice matters! 👉Sign here: https://lnkd.in/gqYESjjw #CleanAirForAll #HarborCraftRule #ProtectOurCommunities #AirQualityMatters #SaveLives
Tell the EPA: Approve life-saving protections to safeguard California’s health & air quality today!

Prop. 4: A Historic Win for Climate Resilience and Environmental Justice! We're proud to join The Nature Conservancy and the Community Water Center in supporting Prop. 4, a monumental measure bringing efficient, sensible investments in proven solutions to California. With billions allocated to drought relief, wildfire prevention, energy projects, and more, Prop. 4 also ensures that at least 40% of these funds will directly benefit lower-income communities most impacted by climate change. This is a powerful step forward for clean air, equity, and sustainability! ✊💧💨 #CleanAir #Prop4 #ClimateResilience #California https://lnkd.in/grDwk8AF
